My son, Colin is an 8th grader at DSA, but I have a daughter at
Morehead as well. We received this note from our PTA president on Saturday. I did not know if any of the DSA folks had heard this. I remembered your name from the last time DPS began discussing Magnet schools. I did not know if you still had an email listed of interested folks.
There is also a Common core curriculum change as well. I will put it at the bottom since it may be of interest to the same group.
Thanks,
Kelly Donaldson
DPS is presenting a new Magnet Proposal to the public on June 19th at 6pm during the District PTA meeting that is open to everyone. The School Board will take action on the proposal later this month. This may affect linkages between Elementary and Middle Schools or Walk Zones around the magnets as well as the themes of DPS magnets. The 19th will be our only chance to hear what is in the proposal and comment before the board acts on it. Please attend if you can.

Crossing the Bridge to Common Core and Essential Standards
The Common Core State Standards in K-12 Mathematics and K-12 English Language Arts, released by the National Governors Association Center For Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers, were adopted by North Carolina on June 2, 2010. North Carolina is in the first group of states to embrace clear and consistent goals for learning to prepare children for success in college and work.
The North Carolina Essential Standards were rewritten for all other curricular areas (i.e., non-CCSS courses). The New Essential Standards are written using the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (RBT) to help move to the complex thinking expected from 21st Century graduates. The RBT was chosen because it has well-defined verbs and is built on modern cognitive research.
Durham Public Schools is committed to preparing teachers and students for a solid implementation of both sets of standards beginning in the 2012-13 school year, working towards our goal of having all students career- and college-ready and globally competitive. Our training and implementation plan is known as the Crossing the Bridge (CTB) to Common Core and Essential Standards.
From DARE:
As excerpted from email by Nancy Cox in previous post:
".... the magnet and student assignment plan will be reviewed by the
School Board at its Monday, June 11th Instructional services meeting,
4:30pm Fuller. Changes to the plan could be made at this meeting. "
PLEASE READ THE PLAN AND TRY TO ATTEND THIS MEETING OR WRITE TO THE
BOARD DIRECTLY.
Please do NOT use the listserve to communicate your ideas to the
board. The listserve is populated with all sorts of members
(including the press) and the board is not able to speak freely.
Thank you.
We can make public comments at the June 11 meeting (Instructional Services subcommittee) , but we won’t know the actual full content of the plan. (unless we can find it posted on the web beforehand) But not a bad idea to reiterate public opinion.
June 19th is actually the regional PTA meeting, at which Ferebee will announce the plan. No public comment, but the meeting is open to all, not just members of PTA Council.
Once we know the plan, we can comment at the June 28 full BOE meeting at which Becoats will formally present the entire Board with the plan.
I believe this is correct, someone please update if I got it wrong.
