I have heard a 'rumor' that DPS intends to leave Durham School of the
Arts as is. But, Dr. Becoats will be speaking at Riverside High School
Auditorium, 5:30pm to 6:30pm, tomorrow, Wednesday, January 25., with
an update on the school systems Strategic Plan.

I hope that the rumor is true, and current policies will continue at
DSA. Just in case, I hope someone can find the time to attend this
public meeting to hear what Dr. Becoats has to say, and report back to
this discussion group. Particularly, if anything at all concerning
DSA is discussed, we need to know about it.

Update on the DPS strategic plan.

Part variety show and part dog and pony show this presentation was short on detail but long on entertainment. I can say that within DPS music is definitely alive and well. Our own DSA advanced guitar class provided wonderful pre-meeting entertainment. They are credits to their teacher. Other schools also provided some real talented youngsters to entertain the crowd.

However, when it came to the strategic plan, there were few details. The good news is, there were no new initiatives announced. Dr. Becoats, who has obviously aged since he came to Durham, pointed out gains at the high school level in Algebra I, Biology, English I (11th Grade) and a decline in the drop out rate. All slight, but still improvements. He also announced that approximately half of the stragegies scheduled for completion in 2011 were not in fact completed. It is a process.

Alan,

Thanks for attending and keeping us up to date.  Our best defense of DSA is (1) keeping our eyes and ears open, and,(2), thanks to our dedicated faculty, staff and students at DSA, continuing the great academic performance and artistic achievements of our school.

Alan and Howard,
Thanks to both of you for keeping us (me) informed. There was such high emotion with the happenings of Oct, Nov and Dec., I think all of us are still recovering! Thank you again for the dedication.
