The Durham Association of Educators will hold a "Pep Rally for Public
Education" next Friday afternoon at the CCB Plaza downtown (see
attachment). A "walk-in" in support of public education and school workers is planned at DSA for the following Monday 11/4, 8-8:30 a.m. outside in front of Weaver Auditorium.
It's pretty clear that educators in North Carolina are having a
tough time. Morale is low (this is the case at DSA, too) and our
teachers are leaving their jobs in increasing numbers. I don't want
to suggest we get into a political discussion of teacher pay,
testing, or any of the other contentious topics surrounding the
state's commitment to education. What I would like to do is share
this information with you and ask you to pass it on to your friends
and neighbors.
Show your solidarity with teachers by participating in these events
if you'd like. If not, if rallies and "walk-ins" aren't for you,
there are other ways to support teachers and staff on a more
personal level.
If you'd like more information about either event or would like to
know what you can do to help spread the word (by passing out
handbills before or after school perhaps), you can get in touch with
Martha Ramirez (ESL teacher at DSA) at
mramir...@gmail.com.
