Getting this when I boot the Z800.  If I hit F1 it boots fine and says I have 48gb ram (which I do).  Should I try resetting the ram or does it seem like something worse?

To the extent I have ever had a memory module fail a self-test I have always replaced it. And I only purchase RAM with a 100% unconditional lifetime warranty. I am assuming your have a dual-processor system and that you have 4GB units in your slots, following this configuration:

(PDF alert)

Please note that Unbuffered and Registered DIMMs cannot be mixed in a system, so if you have one DIMM stick that is different, that could be the cause.

Had this once.  I turned off the Option ROM messages in BIOS and it went away.

Sean, did it turn out to be bad ram?

Nope, just something about the startup that once I turned off the ROM messages for everything but the RAID it went away.

That is pretty sweet. I forgot they had a color screen. All I can remember is the amber or green CRT glow. What are you doing with it?

I wonder if they can be repurposed for some automation other than VTR and switcher control. RS422 and pegs are probably pretty easy to implement in  other electronics.

Trigger your coffee maker.  I assume that unit has GPI, so a simple relay on the end of that should do the trick!  ;^)

There is a limited role for linear editing still. I know of at least one facility with an old Sony 9000 and they cut down tape there.

And despite the fact that rendering times have vastly improved, there is nothing quite like the zero rendering time of linear.

We are still running two suites with Sony BVE2000 linear editors for our Distribution operations.  (They even control HDcams!)  Sometimes it is just easier to grab tape masters from a library and drop in new spots and promos, maybe Pre-read edit in a ratings icon or something and you're done.  If we had to ingest every show and then wait for the new master to spit out of a non-linear editor, we would never be able to keep up.

Of course, a lot of newer programming is file based and that all goes through NL editors, of course.  And, we are doing more and more of the work this way, as time goes on.

BUT, I did just have to buy another used D2 VTR to play another old library of tapes!  Thanks goodness these are going to Dbeta masters, cuz it will not be too much longer until D2 is officially dead, as Sony is no longer making and selling the head drums.  Its just a matter of time...

All this waxing nostalgic!  I started with CMX System 50 (punch tape edls!), then 340, 3400, GVG 41, 141, Ampex ACE (look ahead auto assembly), then Accom Axial and preread...All relics now.

At present, I'm nostalgic for Avid DS as I've mostly moved to Premiere now. DS is great for so many things.

Yes, the first ones did, Omni 1000 - we were an Alpha site started with v1.0 - boot time 4 1/2 minutes Motorola 68020 processor.
The second generation only took 40 seconds Omni 1000E - Motorola 68020 and an added 68040 processor.

Yes they still work with tape decks - SRW-5500 works fine and also, with a GVG Zodiak switcher - E-Mems and all! No Pegs (that was GVG editor) - yes - GPIs. At one point we had the 16 internal GPIs and an external GPI chassis (8) all woking to trigger the ADO, cart machines, character generator, etc. It was a Symphony - oh, no that is a different product....

We did use the CMX most recently to make music video compilation HD tapes. (That was back when the videos arrived on tape). Hard to beat the speed with up to 10 decks connected and Look Ahead Preview running.

Igor,

trivia...
I actually was the reason CMX added color. The original OMNI was as below, but with no colors. Every time color was brought up to the CMX development team it was discounted due to research they had done based on jet fighter pilots and monochrome screens!
I created a color mock up of the screen using our fancy dancy Quanta Delta character generator showing the yellow highlight on machine selection and the record command text block filled with red and a preview filled with orange and they must have had an aha moment - they added color as a result - CMX even sent me a CMX OMNI appreciation plaque for the effort.

Ah yes, love these waxing nostalgia runs..

The ole Ace kept me in a job for almost a decade..

Then came PreRead, and then the non linear finally started to make more sense, once we got off the optical drives with 30 min to a side!!

It's a little newer technology than CMX or Grass editors, but has anyone here worked on DFX Composium?

So, since we've already into in the "crazy category" here, anyone
know of the Ampex RA-4000, and if, has anyone worked one..?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ampex-RA-4000-video-automation-programmer-brochure-/190521587104

At the time it wasn't even called an editor or edit controller but an "Automatic Programmer".

In the early 80's it controlled a couple of Ampex AVR2's (2" Quad machines) and then
later on also a couple of "in-house-interfaced" Bosch BCN 50/51's.

BIG buttons and Nixie tubes...

...oh boy, that brings on memories.

DFX was pretty awesome when it worked. The boards had these long connectors that would warp fro heat and lose contact.
