I see Ross Shane post a photo on FaceBook of a tennis tournament he attended in Delray Fl last week. He didn't know that he also took a photo of me as the courtside Camera Op.

Life continues to be fun, and the world is smaller than we think.

Cheers everyone.

I love synchronicity! Cheers to the old list — I’m recently retired (09/22) in Williamsburg VA now, we moved to help out my mother-in-law who needs a bit more looking after now. Love it when this list sparks up now and again.

Fun fact, I lived in Delray for 9 years and my condo was a little over a mile from the Tennis Center. Great venue, especially with Boston's on the Beach right around the corner.

Believe it or not, I’m still here too…

Can’t believe it has been 25-ish years and a few lifetimes ago when I met most of you. Fyi - I now live in Victoria, BC. Bugged out of LA about 2 years ago!

Hope everyone is doing well. 🙂

When I first joined the list, I was dating this girl I was head-over-heels for. My kids weren’t born yet.

Our oldest is about to go to work (just talked to her) for her night-shift as a labor and delivery nurse. My youngest is in music school and might go on tour pretty soon. And I’ve been that girl’s husband for 26-odd years.

The days are long, the years are short…

Hi all,
I'm still keeping my DS even though I'm working on Resolve nowadays. I'm actually a pensioner, but I do still work, not as much as before and in a different way. Mostly I work with documentaries that discuss the collision between humans and nature, as well as climate issues.
I hope you all are doing fine.

I’m still here too - Hello from Toronto! (Canada, to be specific, as I just learned there are 15 places around the world named Toronto!)

Miss the DS dearly, but have found comfort in the arms of DaVinci Resolve Studio, and still use my trusty Media Composer.  I have dabbled in Premiere, but only when I made a few 3D 360 videos for headset presentation because it came with appropriate VR tools built-in.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Roy.

Hei fra Oslo!

Still here, still missing DS, been running my own company since 2015 doing mostly motion design and animation, as designer/director and producer. I live mostly in AE, and do most editing in Premiere, with the occasional visit toResolve and AvidMC.

I grew up in Bergen but moved down to Oslo (almost 40 years ago), how have you acclimatised to the weather? Not too different from Washington I would think …

Let me know if you are in Oslo, we could perhaps have a coffee and talk AI one day :)

How great to see everybody here! The world has kept spinning, even if our hard drives don't anymore, and we each seem to be making our way, having had a great experience in this community. As for me, my editing work has slowed significantly, as I lost my agency job last April  (21+ years there). At 62, I've found there aren't many employers looking to hire a senior level editor who's likely to leave in a few years. Still working in TV, though, as a replay operator in OB trucks wherever I can get the gigs - though there are fewer and fewer of those as broadcasters produce remote shows from centralized studios. When I'm not in a truck, most of my time is spent as communications coordinator at my church - website maintenance, graphics, and tech stuff like video streaming and sound. I use Premiere Pro on my POS office computer to do simple ministry videos, just to keep my hand in the game.
Best wishes to all!

I think it’s very cool how so many of us have stayed somehow in the creative game. It’s what we do, right?

For the past 7 years, I’ve been running Supersphere - www.supersphere.io. In many ways, it has taken me back to what got me started in the first place - music. We've produced 250+ immersive events over the past 6 years or so, mostly music, but also a good deal of esports and the odd corporate event here and there. That has allowed me to work with some incredible artists and meet a few of my idols. I got to hang with Paul McCartney for a month or two when we were doing VR films with him. That didn’t suck. We also built our own software that is about to be released for doing virtual performances and productions. (Preview here… https://vimeo.com/supersphere/review/798541253/fa51945de9

Drew - great to see you here - AI in media is a fascinating place to be. I’ve spent a ton of time exploring the intersection of creativity and AI. Not just the pure creative… but the ethical perspectives and ramifications are deep. If there’s one thing I have learned from this group and many other places, it’s… never stop learning and never stop creating. The past 6 months or so of Midjourney, DallE, and ChatGPT have been probably the most fun I’ve had with software in a long time. It’s the biggest single shift in the creative world that we’ve seen since linear to non-linear. It’s one of those, “everything is going to change” moments.

Michael - being a train conductor is an awesome gig. Love that.

John - thanks for the kind words, re: Quantel. I actually went to ASSIMILATE for a while after Quantel, then largely dropped out of the direct media tools world. I still personally use the Adobe suite when I want to edit something, and a ton of music tools for that part of my brain. Using Resolve just always made me feel sad, because it felt like DS’s demented stepchild, and people stopped inviting me to parties when I kept bringing it up. I’ve turned into the “well, in MY day” guy on that subject.

Keep on trucking’…

Sean and I were texting a few weeks ago about missing containers, trees, and global DVEs. (We are Premiere mostly and Resolve for color sometimes)

Still in Michigan - Ann Arbor with my own production company. Don't edit as much as I used to - I let the younger guys do that. But now I am a licensed drone pilot and do that on our shoots. I tell my wife - I am "working."

Cheers to you all! (Doyle - I will stop by for my train ride this summer.)

I still fit in my DS T-shirt. I wear it frequently. The shirt and the mouse pad are all I have left I think. Oh, and my presets I used to cart around from gig to gig. Those live on a drive somewhere.

I really haven't cut much in the last decade. I color, finish, media wrangle, and talent wrangle. Not as fun as cutting but it pays the bills. I miss client/producer-supervised edits the most. 😕

Hey all!

I am still here as well.  Recently retired from academia and back to editing.  I still have the old Softimage DS print ad I was in and it is now in my  (wait for it...) grandsons room!  Glad I opened this link up!  Meatfest anyone?

Still have my DS mug, but dishwasher chemicals have washed the logo away. My T-shirt died many years ago after regular use! But I’m still here as well after retiring from academia, like Scott.

I still wear my shirt and my mouse pad still sits on my desk.

Side note. Does anyone know how to convert gen files to something we can use now? Got some old DS files that someone just hit me up about. It's been more than a decade since I was on one. Is there a way to convert or do you have to have a DS running?

Thanks and happy holidays.

I've asked some people in Avid several times over the years for the file
format but they refuse (..as if they're actually doing something with
it? Please..) I started at one point reverse-engineering it but then
asked myself why I was putting any time into it, and stopped.

Drastic Technologies' full "Media Reactor" can apparently read them but
they're an even worse company to deal with than Avid and it's just not
worth the money unless it was your only last hope.

i have Drastic's QC, (and 4k scope, both i don't really use it anymore), booted it up today, it opens .gen, and has an export option that i've never had a reason to use
i have a DS running, so that's what i use when i need to access archives, still use my DS for paint and titles

I still use DS regularly.

I really can’t decide whether or not to apply myself to learning Resolve to a competent level. I’ve paid for Studio but my Z840 doesn’t really have the GPU power to support it properly which aids my prevarication.

Plus I’m 70 this year so disinclined to apply myself to very much at all…

None of which is of any help to Jason ;)

Cheers,
Tony

All good Tony. A guy name Jos hit me up directly after my post. He's a lurker that can't reply to the group so he emailed directly.

He said the gen files were an avi base and that if we renamed them to avi that it might work. I'm waiting for the person that needed to open the files to confirm whether it worked or not. The holidays have slowed everything down. Hopefully I'll have an answer in the next few days or early next week regarding the work around.

Either way I always enjoy the chats here whether they are helpful to me or not. Good to see the knowledge base still exists.

And I can't believe you'll be 70 Tony. Never met you but been around here since the late 90s/early 00s and you never seemed 20 years older than me. 😁

Thanks
Jason

They're definitely not AVI.

Maybe he was thinking of the old 'reference movies' which were in an AVI
container but were still using the .gen files via a custom codec.

GenLook? I think that was just the little standalone utility to show you
some of the metadata and let you step through frames, but it otherwise
didn't do anything (convert/export, etc) and was a closed-source Avid
utility.

Technically it should've been fairly easy to get the frames out of
uncompressed .GEN files into a more generic usable format (say, DPX
sequence) but I didn't get as far as figuring out how they
packed/arranged the pixel data which wasn't immediately obvious which is
when I questioned why I was putting any effort into it at all :)

I still have a Windows 7 partition on a secondary workstation with DS
installed in it though I haven't booted into it in a long time to see if
it still works (it's in a different machine than what was my actual
normal DS machine, and I don't remember how the licensing worked.. I
think it was ethernet MAC-based so it probably won't run anymore)

wait… what?

i always thought I was the old man of the group and i’ll be 68 this year.

so i certainly understand the disinclination to apply myself to new things.

that being said, when my personal MC license expires this year i’m likely not renewing it.

i want to switch to resolve for whatever personal projects i might do since it’s free.

i haven’t had a DS since 2013 when the company i was working for closed down.

i’ve been using MC and premiere since then but even there, the company i worked for provided me with systems so i didn’t really need my own.

and then last year was my involuntary retirement so what do i really actually need anymore anyway?

it IS good th see that some of the DS folks are still kicking and keeping in touch.

happy new year to one and all.

Changing the name didn't seem to work as Bob mentioned.

Any other options would be good. I'm checking to see how important access to the footage is.

Thanks all and Happy new year!

try this:
after it's installed, don't licence it, run in freebie mode and  it will open up .gen
if the footage is worth transcoding i'd assume you'll have to buy a licence to use the export function, i've never tested it and i don't have an unlicensed version
when i'm back at my studio on Monday i can take a stab at exporting a .gen from it

@ Tony, i've centered on Resolve, some wack-0 stuff, some stuff DS  just does better, some stuff is the same under a different name, was not huge mountain to climb tho

Resolve it’s really easy to use.  And super compete set of tools.   There is nothing from DS you would not find on Resolve.  And the relinking of media is super fast.  Only thing I hate is that when a file is missing there is not an easy way to know where is supposed to be.

and yes, as many of us.. I turned 68 yesterday....

greetings all, and may we survive 2025..

Jim Fink - dang me if it ain't just premiere and rarely even, after efx... down to one steady archive based, no end in sight client...

All I have around is the one from the last DS v11 package:

EuControl_x64_2_6_2_078202.exe:
https://clients.idolum.com/get/f78c1e140bb4

Happy to grab you whatever you want off Avid, looks like it's called the
"EUCON Unified Install" now and all the version numbers are weird :)
