So, I am exporting a series of web stream masters, from interlaced SD and HD masters.

When I play these as ProRes SD and HD Interlaced encoded clips on progressive monitors from QT Player on a Mac, there are interlacing issues in the QT Player.

However, if I upload to Vimeo, or re-import to Premiere and put in a timeline to play back at settings from QT file, all looks as it should on Vimeo stream, and on all monitors, Progressive or Interlaced.

What's up with Quicktime player in this situation.
Can it not handle interlaced material playing to a progressive screen ?

Thanks
Jim

I don't know of a setting in QT Player which forces progressive playback. I do know that Vimeo re-encodes everything you send it, so perhaps interlacing is being removed on that end.

In QT V7 there’s a choice between HQ, single field and Deinterlace. Go to Movie Properties, then Visual Settings tab with video track selected. Not sure about later versions of QT.

OK, good ole QT V7...
Thanks Rob..

and John, yea, QT is showing the fields, as it should, you are right, Vimeo is covering the progressive on it's incoming encode.

Looks like for streaming delivery of older interlaced SD and HD Masters, we should be outputting ProRes Progressive master files. The other option is to count on the folks who later take these files to upload for streaming that they know what they are doing, and will automatically set them to Progressive...
