I've received a font folder (Gotham HTF) and all the fonts show up as 0kb. Windows won't install anything. Haven't run into this before. Ideas?

Yes, tell the Mac genius that sent you that, that is sending you the link to the font and not the real font. Most Mac people just drag the font into emails and Mac just send a link to it. They have to zip the font first and be sure that have some size and not 0 KB before send it.

Usually the same kind of people that request Pantone colors for their TV logos or video screenshots at 300 DPI :-)

Also, Mac fonts may have the information in the resource fork of the file and not the data fork. OS X can use fonts in either the resource or data fork, Windows it's data only. This assumes more than just an alias link was pulled into the email.

Got it zipped - total size a little over 1MB - but when I unzip the file they're all still 0kb. Hmm.

Okay, so there are two folders, the Mac OSX folder and the one with the 0kb files. Both are colored green (encrypted, right?). I assume the Mac OSX folder is the suitcase - it has bigger files in it.

Sheesh - I feel like such a noob. How the heck to I install this font?????

Because probably some of the folders are hidden. Tell windows to show you hidden files too

Also sometimes the link and the real file have the same name, so check before extract what file have size and extract just that because you can have the zero KB overwritten get the real font. Also, there is a chance that the font is one of those Mac only fronts in which case you need a software to convert it to TTF or OTF. Again. Assuming you are on PC.

...this is the whole reason I used to keep that old copy of Fontographer around in the Thoughtstream days. Looks like someone's brought it back to life: http://www.fontlab.com/font-editor/fontographer/

You'll have to convert it with something like TransType -

From some time we have all our Mac people here using TTF and OTF fonts only, that way the same font works for any machine, PC Mac and Linux. No more fonts headaches.

yeah… the days of postscript type 1 fonts SHOULD be LONG gone by now.

even TTF’s should be mostly gone. OTF’s should be the way of the world at this point.
