Friends, I'm in search of a DMG of the original Mojave Mac OS - 10.14. My High Sierra iMac needs an upgrade and all the Apple downloads require 10.14 to even launch. Could use some help - thanks!

Okay, I have a 2009 Classic Mac Pro. I upgraded it to High Sierra by “flashing it” to a 5,1prior to that it was stuck with El Capitan.

After flashing, I upgraded to High Sierra by going to the Apple website and doing a search for “High Sierra.” It took me  to the HS page, which you cannot find any other way. The website asked me if I wanted to open the App Store. There, it used the App s=Store to do the upgrade, which included a Boot ROM update.

I then purchased a Sapphire Pulse RX 570 graphics card, which has a Metal-capable GPU. High Sierra is the first Os that supports these cards, so now is the time to get a metal card if you do not have one. I also recommend that, if you are changing outthe cards, change the coin-shaped battery underneath that slot. It is time.

The way I upgraded to HS was to purchase an SSD from OWC. They also sell the NewerTech Adapt-a-drive which will adapt a Mac Pro sled for an SSD. High Sierra insist that you format your boot drive as APFS, but your data (User) drive does not need to be APFS. I highly recommend that you do this. Here is how: https://www.lifewire.com/move-macs-home-folder-new-location-2260157

Now, for what you really asked about.

To upgrade to Mojave, make sure your GPU is Metal compatible. I recommend that you do NOT upgrade to Mojave on your only boot drive. I recommend that you clone your boot drive, so you should think about getting a pair of SSDs. For cloning a drive, I recommend Carbon Copy Cloner: https://bombich.com/

Once you have a cloned drive, go to the Apple website and do s search for Mojave. The Mojave upgrade page will ask you if you want to use the App Store. You want that. The App store will download a Boot ROM Patch if it detects that your boot ROM is older than 144.0.0.0.0 That boot ROM allows you to have a PCIe-mounted drive in your Classic Mac Pro and mounts it as an internal drive. This can be very handy for the new M2 SSDs, because if you get a big one, you can send video files there for really high speed access, so you do not need an SAS array.

For booting, I use my SATA-2 bays because your computer will always boot fastest with those. The bay in the front is the first SATA bay your Mac looks to boot from, then back to the last, check the DVD and, finally, something on your PCIe bus. That takes about a minute.

Now, if you do not have a Metal graphics card that is an OEM card, you cannot see your boot screen. The update of your Boot ROM takes some time, but follow the instructions and be patient.

Then, the upgrade to Mojave takes a while. This was on an SSD, and it took me two hours before it finally booted. Here is my system:

  Model Name: Mac Pro
  Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
  Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
  Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
  Number of Processors: 2
  Total Number of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per Processor): 8 MB
  Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled
  Memory: 32 GB
  Boot ROM Version: 144.0.0.0.0
  SMC Version (system): 1.39f5
  SMC Version (processor tray): 1.39f5

Once you have Mojave running, use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your boot drive onto another SSD.

Additionally, to get back your boot screen, I recommend OpenCore. https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Install-Guide/prerequisites.html
It is a boot loader that will restore that capability.

Good luck!

-Mark

I believe you will need to download it from apple.

They started making the download images time sensitive.  I’ve had ones that I save from previous installations that no longer work as they “expired”

They don’t make it easy, but some googling will allow you to download an older OS from Apple.

The way to get around that is to set your clock/calendar on your computer back far enough to enable Mojave install.

But I installed Mojave, using the steps below, on my Mac Pro in April of this year.

The Mac OS updates are easy to find (10.14.1, xx.6, etc.) but those need at least the original (xx.0) to install on top of. That is nowhere reliable to be found, and certainly not from Apple, as they want us on Catalina. (I did find it on a site called sundryfiles.com, but that seems hinky to me).

A 2010 and a 2012 Mac will NOT install Catalina natively. One needs the DosDude1 patch. OpenCore will stop the OS install from checking the type of CPU you have.

I am not interested in Catalina right now, as it will not run any 32-bit applications and I run a few of those.

Is your problem that you have Mojave and want to reinstall it??

John, try OpenCore

I'm on High Sierra. I need to upgrade OS because of Microsoft requirements. I don't want to go all the way to Catalina, for preserving a few 32-bit apps.

Okay. I have done this.

Mojave will never install on a Mac Pro without a Metal GPU. The one I have is the Sapphire Pulse RX570 8GB. The Sapphire Pulse RX580 is a very good and very compatible graphics card that will work in High Sierra and will allow you to upgrade to Mojave. My system is a 2009, which will not run High Sierra. I had to “flash” it to be a 5,1 in order to upgrade to High Sierra.

A 2010 and a 2012 will run HS just fine and it will also upgrade just fine to Mojave.

Here are the steps:
Install the Metal card. If you are using the Sapphire Pulse, you must power it with a dual-mini-6-pin-to-8-pin power connector. Your two mini-6-pin outlets are on your backplane board underneath where your graphics card sits. I recommend you also change out the coin-type battery when changing out your graphics card because it is time.

Clone  your boot drive. Do not try to install Mojave on the only drive you have that will boot. use Carbon Copy Cloner to do this.

Download. Install.
