Does anyone have a full resolution, UHD (keyable) file showing the safe areas for UHD?  Preferably to the DCI (Discovery Communications) technical standard?  I just got a call from upstairs and we are going to be receiving programming shot full 4K and they’re concerned that the small bit of reformatting (cropping) to UHD may place some titles out of safe.

Thanks all!

Roy.

Thanks, that’ll work for my work, but I think they are looking for a keyable version because they’ve received that from Discovery in the past for HD and I guess want the same thing in 3840x2160….

i haven’t seen a SMPTE standard for that yet but i have seen one for the EU that i think should help you out.

it’s located here:

a little photoshop work and you could make your own keyable.

I made it past 4:3 a few years ago, but haven’t made it to 16:9 safe titles yet…still stuck at 14:9 for HD!

from what I’ve been able to determine, the SMPTE standard hasn’t changed since 2009.

that specifies 90% for title safe and 93% for action safe in a 16x9 frame.

so whether it’s HD, 2K, 4K, or 8K, if it’s 16x9, those are the percentages.

That’s what I had figured too. I just hope that I’ll be able to move up to those numbers in the not-too-distant future!

That's AWESOME!  The, now defunct, Al Jazeera America not only had a 4x3 title safety requirement, but their custom 4x3 grid was slightly off center for some reason.

So are looking at EBU and Smtpe with different standards again?

Everything i see on UHD, and the pilot i just did, we did at 4096 x 2160
But Roy is looking for 3840 x 2160, which seems to be the European Standard.

I thought we got rid of that with 1920 x 1080

UHD is the broadcast version of the true DCI 4K and is defined at 3840X2160 as its aspect ratio is 1.78:1 (16:9). I’m sure a lot of production companies are working at the full 4096x2160 and then deliver, or the broadcaster “downconverts”, as 3840x2160.  Frankly, other than the argument that we needed yet another format to accommodate 16:9 sets, I really wish we would’ve just left everything at “full” 4K and let those shows air with a slight letterbox.

Anyway, so yes, no matter what it’s called, I was looking to see if anyone had safe action/title guides for 3840x2160. J

Roy.
