Greetings from 2030 Water Resources Group. We are excited to inform you about a new initiative by Water Resources Department (WRD), Government of Maharashtra (GoM).
Over the past 10 years, the GoM has invested an estimated Rs 71,000 crores and has created 6.73 lakh ha of irrigation, which is about 30% of the state’s total agriculture area. Now, the GoM is pioneering a unique initiative to implement integrated models to enhance command area water productivity (Water-to-market access) and wishes to actively partner with a range of private sector, civil society and community-based organizations to co-create scalable and sustainable models. This initiative is expected to conserve scarce water resources, enhance farmer’s income and unlock new business opportunities.
The 2030 Water Resources Group, hosted by the World Bank, (‘2030 WRG’: www.2030wrg.org) is a public-private-civil society partnership that supports governments to accelerate reforms with the aim of ensuring sustainable water resource management for the long-term development and economic growth of countries around the world. In Maharashtra, the 2030 WRG facilitated establishment of Maharashtra Water Multi Stakeholder Platform (MSP) Steering Board in May 2017. The MSP is headed by the Chief Secretary, Government of Maharashtra (GoM) and consists of representatives from government, industry, civil society and academia and 2030 WRG acts as a Secretariat for the MSP.
The MSP is now inviting interested private sector organizations, civil societies and community based organizations to propose integrated projects with an outcome focus on (i) enhancing off-farm and on-farm water use efficiency, (ii) productivity enhancement, and (iii) establishing market linkages, either individually or as a coalition.
