Ola! Bon Dia!

I have a primary question to all of you here.

I have got a job offer from Lisboa and the employer wants me to arrive
to Portugal.

I have completely no idea, how much you earn there an a webdevelopers.

I understand it can be different for each person, depends how good the
person is.
I am just asking , because he is awaiting a response from me how much
I expect to earn.

I really don't want to give him to high price but also I want to have
a decent salary which will be average for your place.

That's why I am asking you guys. What is a average monthly salary for
web/php developer in Lisboa.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Tom

Hi Tom,

Portugal is one of the countries where you'll find a greater discrepancy
in wages. These will differ by location (which city and area of the
country), employer (big or small company), responsibility (kind of work
you'll be doing), etc... Keep in mind also that Portuguese negotiate
wages per month value and that you'll receive two extra free months per
year, one on Summer, the other near Christmas. Also, remember that
people usually negotiate values before taxes. Your employer will keep a
little around 34% for IRS and another 11% will go to social insurance
(http://www.worldwide-tax.com/portugal/portugal_tax.asp)

The location is very important also to calculate your expenses. It would
be fairly cheap to live in a city like Braga, but you should expect to
spend at least twice as much just for living in Lisbon.

Generically, 1.500 to 2.000 euros per month (before taxes) would be
probably considered a medium wage. Anyway, as I said, opinions may vary
greatly about what would be an average wage. Specially, at this
moment... did you hear about the little economic crisis that the world
has been facing lately? Well, I don't know from where you're coming, but
it was strongly felt in Portugal and you may be facing some agressive
competition.

Maybe someone else may answer to you in more detail. Anyway, if you want
more information, you should tell a bit more about your abilities and
the kind of job you've been offered.

Roberto

Hey Roperto.
Thank you for you response.

I will be responsible for 2 new portals. Will be developing and
theming them using Drupal. Also some PHP work will be to do and text
messaging service.
I will stay in the center of Lisbon.

I am advanced Drupal developer and have a good SEO base.

What else should I write ?

Thanks again for your answer.

Hi Tom,

I'm a drupal developer from New Zealand - I've been in Lisbon for around 3 months now (i'm not working for a portuguese company).

I didn't see your original post, so I'm not sure if you've been to Lisbon before.

If you haven't at all, or haven't been for an extended period of time - it's an *awesome* city to live in.

Safe, very cheap by European standards (except mobile phones and internet), and wonderful people.

So even though the wages are low by European standards, you've got some awesome quality of life characteristics here.

If I could get a visa I'd move here - so you're very lucky to have the opportunity in my opinion.

I was hoping someone else could answer to you... I am really not sure
about how the crisis affected the wages in Portugal because I left
before it happened and before that I worked mostly as a freelance.
Anyway, other things that you should consider are: will you be the sole
responsible for the portals or will you work in a team? If it's a team,
will you lead it or not? Will you have to take care of the design or
will it be the responsibility of someone else?

Best of luck!

I am probably not the best person to answer this, because I know my
fees are a bit above normal.

I work as a freelancer (I am actually in the process of creating my
own company, now) and I usually get paid by the hour. Depending on the
project my fees can vary a lot but they're usually not lower than €25
per hour, being €30 most of the time, and having done a few projects
for almost €40 per hour.

Hey guys!
Thanks for your answers.
Willie, how long can you stay in Portugal being Australian citizen ?
Only 3 months ?
Thank you for describing Lisboa, yes I've been there before few times,
love the city also. It's big but you can't feel that, did you have the
same feeling ?

Roberto, I will be working probably alone. Maybe later somebody will
be needed to prepare more garphic stuff, but by now , I know no one
will be working with me.

Raul, thanks for you Re: also. You wrote about fees you were taking as
a freelancer or fulltime worker ?

Thanks, guys, I am still waiting for the answer, I hope to meet you
one day in Portugal :)

Sorry, I didn't make that clear: I was referring to fees when working
as a freelancer.

Neverthless, seek info about the company that is hiring you and also about their managers.
There are several complains on the internet regarding companies, also portuguese, that hire foreigners and afterwards let them down.

Best,
Lopo
