Hello Drummers,

Looking for a bit of input on what to charge (or what to expect) for an all-day back-to-school workshop in the Fall.

5 sessions with approx 70-80 kids in each

2 of the sessions are 1 hour long, 3 of the sessions are 45 mins.

The focus is on building community within the school and 'getting to know you' among the new and old peers.

All the details for the day have been worked out (timing, class size, location, etc.) but no word on how much is being paid.  I did mention cost in an email a few times back (see below) but no reply was given.  How do I tactfully bring it up again

I don't believe we have discussed cost at all and I was wondering if you could give me an idea of your budget for this activity?  Please keep in mind I would be bringing in all the instruments/materials needed for these sessions.

Any advice is appreciated... for fees and/or ideas on things to do with the kiddos.  I do have a toolkit of Arthurian-inspired rhythm games, etc. but always looking for more!  I operate on the KISS principle... just so you know!

Thank you in advance!

With gratitude,

Teri Shaw

Hi Teri,

Sounds like a great gig but lots of work.

How much do you need to be paid?

Money is uncomfortable but important.

And this is your business and livelihood so don’t run away from the subject. I would send a follow up email summarizing the schedule and just list your fees for services at the bottom with your payment terms. $XXX due at the time of service or within 30 days etc.

You can include an itemized explanation of your fees, such as equipment, transportation, preparation and planning, staff salary etc.

They’ve already scheduled with you so I doubt that they will cancel - name your price (HIGH) and negotiate down to meet their budget - within reason, if necessary.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

We charge $80 per hour with travel to and from included.  So 1 hour each way and 6 hours of session equals 8 hours at $80/hr equals $640 for the day.  From there you can offer discounts if you feel it's appropriate.

We find that it’s often easier to base pricing by a 1/2 day or full day basis.

Considerations for us are :: number of peeps, ages, number of drums or percussion, venue (indoor or outdoor), travel time/distance, accessibility and proximity to load in/out, do they provide (often useless) volunteers to help unload.load, bring out chairs, clean up, re-sanitize equipment), etc

When DRUMSTRONG mobilizes the trailer to a metro public event, festival, camp (unless it’s one we support), corporate gig, etc, we typically charge $750 for 1/2 day (5 hours) and $1400 for full day (10-12 hours)

We also donate 100s of hours to numerous causes…

Teri,

I suggest you be straightforward with the school.  Tell them you're really looking forward to serving them.  Confirm the date, program timeframes, numbers of students, and everything you'll provide and deliver for them.  Then, also say that you need to confirm your fee and you'll do it for X (?) amount.   Last, ask them how does that sound to them and see what they say.

Fee- When I discuss details of a program, I'll either have a figure in mind so I can give the client a specific quote while we're talking and ask them if that works for them.  Or, I'll gather info, then email a proposal that includes a fee quote.  The 5 programs with 70-80 students each would be a fullll day.  I'd want to bring a support drummer.  I used to do alot of great school programs, but not many now for various reasons.  Depending on whether you plan to do the programs by yourself or bring a support drummer, I'd suggest quoting $850-$950.  I'd plan to pay a support drummer $200-$250 for the day i.e. $25-$30/hr.  If you're ju

Hey Group,

I had this incomplete draft that I never sent, then just mistakenly emailed it.

Oops.  But, I hope the info is helpful.

Blessings,
