The basic ones that come with Server 2012 are only for XP & Vista and I could really use some for Windows 7 & 8 if possible. Even if I am able to go in and modify the XP & Vista ones to accommodate Windows 7, I would still love to find other GPO Templates out there that I can use besides the basic ones provided by Microsoft.

I already started looking through the links that @Bill Kindle provided and they are helping me significantly in making my own, but still would like to see if others have any they would like to share? Or maybe a link to a third-party site?

My last shot in the dark was to make this post on Spiceworks and see what others thought. I can already see that I most likely will not have any luck finding them, so I have already begun creating my own GPO templates to use in the future.

For example, say you have a very specific configuration that requires certain registry entries to be present on any system on your network. This would be a good setting to include in a template policy that you can apply and modify based on specific needs. The starter GPO gives you the baseline, settings you ALWAYS want configured when you create a new GPO.

I am currently experimenting with a F2 capacity. Whenever I try to run a notebook it takes somewhere between 2 and 2.5 minutes to start the spark cluster even though I'm using the starter pool. All settings related to Spark are left as default for the workspace. Tried both running things manually as well as triggering the notebook from data factory.

If I go into a trial workspace and run a notebook the spark session is started in just a few seconds. This makes me think that it might be a limitation depending on which capacity you are using? But the documentation gives no indication of this: -us/fabric/data-engineering/spark-compute

So I have not worked with notebooks for a few weeks. But realized yesterday that this issue seem to have been resolved and notebooks on my F2 capacity are now starting within 10 seconds. Could we get some type of confirmation from Microsoft?

I have unmarked previous reply as solution. For me, the main issue here is that we have no proper way of tracking these type of issues. I have reported multiple issues that have been confirmed by a Microsoft but nothing is added to the known issues page: -us/known-issues - as the page is not updated we cannot really know if the issue has been acknowledged. The page also gives a false impression of few or no issues in Fabric. It is difficult to maintain credibility towards our customers when we don't have transparency from Microsoft.

Hi @FilipO,

Apologies for the issue you have been facing.
We are reaching out to the internal team to get more information related to your query and will get back to you as soon as we have an update.

Hi @FilipO ,

Apologies for the issue you have been facing. We have an update from the team.
We got impacted by this limitation on supporting 1 node starter pools mainly for F2 capacity sku. Team have added this to Known Issues section in the document and the latest version should be published end of this week. We are working on a fix to enable 5 second session start experience for F2 capacity. I will update this thread once the fix is rolled out in few weeks.

Thank you

Hi @FilipO ,

No not yet. We have a deployment freeze in December and this is still being worked on. Team is targeting by Q1 for this to be rolled out to all prod regions. Will update this thread once the support for smaller capacities is enabled.

Hello all have a situation and really dont know what to do. My daughter received a Inspiron Mini with Windows 7 starter several years ago. Recently think computer picked up a virus, well at least that what AVAST reported. It was removed but right after the system crashed. When it started to reboot it wanted to go to repair mode. I continually done this and would never boot back to windows. I attempted every option available including running the Dell Image Restore. It said it restored everything to factory defaults. The computer would would only boot to the repair program but never was able to repair anything. I read many blogs and articles on similair situations and fixes. I have tried all of them. Not sure which one, but one of the "fixes" has really screwed me up. When I attempt to boot now, it says BOOTMGR does not exist. So, I now I can't do any thing except get to the bios setup utility. I thought well since it's really screwed now, what a better time than now to attempt to use LINUX and see how it works. I would like information on what I would need to do to install a version on the computer. This computer is only used for internet stuff, nothing major, just surfing ie facebook. Is there a free version of Linux for something like this?

Did you try running the Dell Diagnostics with the extended hard drive test? support.dell.com/.../document That will tell you if you have a hardware problem or a failing hard drive. No use installing any operating system if the hard drive is failing.

How am I able to get away with this? Well, for starters, you can open as many windows as you want from a single program. So if you want to open 15 tabs in your browser, six images in your photo-editing program, and a couple of instant messenger windows, you can do it. You won't see this warning message until you try to open a fourth program:

If I tried to use this system as a conventional notebook, running multiple Microsoft Office or OpenOffice aps, playing music in iTunes or Windows Media Player, and using third-party IM programs, I would probably be incredibly frustrated with the limitations of Starter Edition. In that scenario I would want to upgrade it to a more powerful version using the Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade feature.

Update 23-Apr: At least two sources have now mistakenly interpreted something in this post to mean that Internet Explorer is exempt from the three-app limit. This is incorrect, as I just confirmed with additional testing. Internet Explorer counts as an application in Windows 7 Starter Edition, in exactly the same way as any other browser. If you have IE8 open, you will be able to open an unlimited number of web pages in IE tabs (just as you can do in Firefox or Chrome), but you will only be able to open two additional applications before you see the error message illustrated above. As I note in this post, you can open Windows Explorer and perform file management tasks without using up one of the three simultaneous applications. But Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer are not the same.

I'm looking at Sophos UTM 9 as a remote access (SSL) VPN server w/ RADIUS authentication. The RADIUS server is Windows Server 2016 running NPS. I've added NPS as an authentication server in WebAdmin and test server settings passes.

SSL VPN Remote Access works like a charm with AD. Just create a Security Group in AD named, e.g., "SSL VPN", assign members to it and use that Group in a limited Backend Group in 'Users and Groups' in an SSL VPN Profile. You'll also want to drag that group into 'Groups' in 'Prefetch Directory Users' on the 'Advanced' tab of 'Definitions & Users >> Authentication Services'.

It's not just a case of adding NPS services to Windows Server and then pointing UTM at it - you have to configure policies on the NPS control panel in Windows to allow VPN connections - see -us/windows-server/remote/remote-access/vpn/always-on-vpn/deploy/vpn-deploy-nps

All of my clients that have AD use AD Backend Groups to authenticate SSL VPN Remote Access. I only recommend RADIUS for IPsec, PPTP and WPA2 Enterprise auth with Wireless Protection - otherwise, it's just a hassle to use this "ancient" (eight+ years older than AD) method that, in essence, rides on top of AD.
