Avengers #298I agree, Fnord: Big John's realism is perfect for this issue, given that Jarvis is the focus. Between this and the Harras-written recovery issue, Jarvis has become a standout character in this book, and I've always regretted that he fades into the background again after this.

Captain America #349Here the Skull is ready to use a doomsday device to send the world back to the pre-industrial era, but just a couple of years from now (real time) the Skull will balk at a scheme by the Viper to blind everyone watching TV at a certain time. There's a lot I like about Gruenwald's Skull, but there are some glaring inconsistencies about the Skull's overall MO and goals. We get a mission statement of sorts next issue, but it seems to be forgotten almost as soon as it's uttered.

Avengers annual #17one of my holy grails of childhood, picked this up that summer in 1988 at a 7-11 and was surprised to see the Hulk in it. great, great stuff and a great Sal Buscema cover. my favorite Avengers line-up!

To No Prize an explanation, we'll say that Carmody is correct that at the time he's contacting N'astirh, he thinks the Right is in shambles and Hodge is dead because it's prior to their resurfacing and the revelation that Hodge is still alive here. And it's possible that the Right had an earlier deal with N'astirh (that may even explain why N'astirh tells Hodge here that he already has his soul), but only because he was able to contact them, not vice versa. It's the Right's ability to contact N'astirh in Limbo that surprises him (and he says it's "unusual", not unprecedented).

Uncanny X-Men #235-238I was wrong about the footnote referencing N'astirh contacting Madelyne being in X-Factor. He does it in X-Terminators #2 and the footnote says see The Uncanny X-Men #238. He doesn't appear anywhere in that issue but does appear in The Uncanny X-Men #236 in a medical monitor in Genosha and Madelyne tells him "Later". This may be a mistake or N'astirh may have given Madelyne a behind the scenes magical boost in the "Thirteen seconds" at the beginning of #238 when she massacres the telepaths.

X-Terminators #2Actually, if you read The Uncanny X-Men #238 carefully, N'astirh isn't shown contacting Madelyne there anywhere. This may be a mistake and they meant to write The Uncanny X-Men #236 in the footnote, which is where we do see him contacting her through a medical monitor and she tells him "Later" (then he blows up the monitor). Or... he may be responsible for massacring the "examining/interrogation team" during the "Thirteen seconds" at the beginning of #238, giving Madelyne a magical boost while she was being probed by the telepaths.

I think Cap would have been running on fumes by the time he could even get to think about Inferno. Actually, Inferno happened at a fortuitous time for the demons involved, since the Avengers had been disbanded, the FF was down to 3 members, X-Factor was down to 4, the X-Men were in Australia and Daredevil was lying half dead in a ditch. With the West Coast Avengers, Iron Man and the Hulk all out west, there wasn't as many heroes running around New York as in any other point in time.

"Rude hands, ruder glances, taunting promises of worse to come," that isn't rape, that's a bad encounter at a club. BUT we also know how isolated Rogue is by her powers (and I think Rogue is one of the most original supercharacters in comic book history) that we can believe even under those limitations, it would/could be a potentially-traumatic experience.

BUT Rogue has long proven herself a superhero, and she can certainly take a little exposure. How many times has she flown around naked because her costume blew apart? BUT looking is not the same as touching. Unwelcome glances should not be treated the same as unwelcome touches. The former requires other people to turn off their eyesight at your command, the latter requires them to keep their hands to themselves, a much simpler task.

BUT reading the story (and Carol's post-facto exposition in #244) from Rogue's devastated withdrawal from reality, and the nasty gleers on the Magistrates' faces when they come into assault her again, there's no doubt what they intend to do, and it's not Code-approved. If a "ruder glance" is all it takes to make her collapse like this, then she's not much of a superhero. A MAN would be expected to handle a rude glance.

BUT there's also the point Claremont is trying to make of being an organized nation, with political and military structures with a recognized chain-of-command. The Magistrates aren't just random mutant-hating goons, they are authorized by [whatever document/constitution makes Genosha a recognized nation] to implement specific tasks, and use military force when needed. Chief Anderson is very clear that those who took liberties with Rogue have been disciplined, because discipline is the main part of her job, and they went beyond the requirements of their mission. BUT this is ignored when they show up a few pages later to torment Rogue again.

Basically, this is the worst example of Claremont being Claremont. John Byrne is still complaining about the incestuous lesbian kiss Kitty gave herself at the end of "Days of Future Past," a story which told us Kate Pryde was given an "intentionally-humiliating examination" before she entered the concentration camp. This is someone we only know as a 13-year old girl. Really, if Claremont's subtext isn't disgusting you on a fundamental level, he's not doing his job.

X-Terminators #2I thought the concept of a 'spell checker' was very clever, especially with the way it worked into N'astirh being infected with the techno-organic virus which he had spent so long fighting. Crotus' status as 'butt-monkey' also worked very well throughout "Inferno."

I don't have any fond memories of the "X-Terminators" series, but the scenes reproduced here are good examples of what the mutant titles (and teen superheroes in general) should offer. They should be fun, they should have interesting character moments which usually have little to do with anything superheroic. Skids and Boom-Boom taking advantage of the chance to play dress-up (like, you know, teenage girls do on occasion) and Rusty trying to prove himself as the leader even then ("No tights.")

It's worth noting that their costumes are a lot better than the New Mutants were wearing at the time, either as graduate X-Babies or rebellious X-Babies. Only Boom-Boom's is hideous, and Rusty looks weird from the 'no tights' rule. Artie and Leech don't need costumes, and Rictor, Skids and Taki look great.

There was an internet meme a year or so ago, how if "The Breakfast Club" took place today, the kids would spend all Saturday texting about what a lousy time they were having and never make friends with each other. Truly, these are comics from a different era.

Avengers #298It blows my mind that Inferno started while the Evolutionary War was still going on! Poor Cap; talk about a busy fella! He's running around between his own title, the Avengers and the Avengers annual and jumping from reclaiming his position of being Captain America, helping to end the Evolutionary War and fielding a new team of Avengers.

X-Factor #34Although the "evil gay" thing IS somewhat unfortunate given the overall lack of gay characters in comics at the time--and the questionable portrayals of many of the LGBT characters that were around--I don't think it was that bad of an issue here.

Hodge's implied love for Warren may have motivated *some* of his evil behaviour (and there is certainly enough real life examples of repressed homosexuality motivating evil behaviour--such as closet-case bullies), but it wasn't responsible for ALL of it. Hodge clearly had some other mental issues going on.

New Mutants #67-70It's with this story that I finally bailed on this title back then. Spyder was just plain goofy and annoying, all the characters seemed to have received a lobotomy, and the story was just dragging past the point that my patience would tolerate. I dumped all my other Marvel titles at the same time(though for slightly different reasons) except for Punisher books, and those I dumped due to severe buyer abuse a few years later. I really didn't get back into Marvel again until Quesada took over.

Doctor Strange #10-13The excellent fanzine Omniverse #1(fall/77) suggested that what Eternity destroyed was actually a parallel earth he dreamed into existence while asleep, and the "recreation" was actually Eternity creating a divergent timeline where he never created the parallel earth to start with.

X-Factor #34I'm of two minds on Candy's death. On the one hand, she deserved some bad karma for her role in the X-Factor scam, which increased mutant prejudice and led to at least one death. OTOH, it's unfair that she has to pay for it when none of the original five, except Angel, do. At least she didn't go out trying to kill babies.
I get that Angel was too upset over Candy's death to think straight but you'd think that someone would consider that cutting off Hodge's head didn't kill him.
Some readers didn't like the implication that Hodge hated Candy because he had an Evil Gay Crush on Warren.
The chronology gets difficult at this point- Excalibur 4 seemingly takes place after the demons arrive at the orphanage since Rachel telepathically senses them after Nathan but Excalibur 6, which takes place "a few nights" after Excalibur 4, takes place a couple of hours after Jean and Scott return from the orphanage. This makes no sense unless one assumes that Scott and Jean took the scenic route trying to rescue Nathan or Rachel suddenly developed precognition.

Marvel Spotlight #32From what I read somewhere, the situation for Spider-Woman is the same one that Shulkie had a few years later: someone else wanted to use the name for something and Marvel did something to prevent it from happening. Yeah a "mutated spider" just sounds ridiculous and does get retro-out, but I guess they were just in a rush and, as someone said above, their philosophy was probably just "well she is a knock-off so no one really should care about it, even with the 'spider' name".
