What would people think about updating this mailing list's settings to prefix subject lines[1] with an identifier like "[Dropwizard] "?

+1

It can be prefixed with [dropwizard-user] and [dropwizard-dev] for respective mailing lists.

Hi,

I don’t think adding a subject prefix is useful. In the end it only clutters the list overview (in either the Google Groups web interface or the email clients of the subscribers) with unnecessary and redundant information.

If you want to sort emails coming in over the list into separate folders, you can use the "List-ID“ header in those emails.

Cheers,
Jochen

I agree there are existing methods for subject filtering. However I think it's useful for human context. I use gmail and it nicely lumps everything under a forums tab which is where I generally view these messages not my labels so the additional context is nice when scrolling thorough messages. I've attached an image to illustrate what I mean.

Does dw and dw-dev seem a reasonable compromise so it's short and doesn't take too many characters of the subject line?

I think the subject prefix is useful for mobile notifications. When an email comes in, it's easier to understand "this is a message from dw-user, so despite how alarming the first few words appear, it's not something I need to dig into straight away." Otherwise I get something like the image attached and have a difficult time distinguishing it from everything else. Of course, the subject prefix will eat into the displayable characters in the notifications. So it cuts both ways.

I think the setting in Google Groups also only applies to email notifications. I don't think the subject prefix appears in the web interface, but I could be wrong.

FYI, the Google Groups web interface does *not* display the subject prefix if set.

See attached screenshot of Node-RED Google Group.  Emails are prefixed with "[node-red]", but the Google Group web interface does not display the prefix.
