This was the point I was making a few weeks ago. The current failsafe code is prone to unexpected behaviour.
I do think it is something which needs some serious attention. Addressing set mode return val fixes some of the problems but as you highlight not all of them.

I agree with Olivier. First finalize a FS flowchart that works, then build a state machine class to follow exactly that. Actually, once the chart is finalized, programming the state machine class should be quite straightforward.
