I am running ardupilot SITL and my MAVProxy map is not loading properly. It says "Unavailable" and the map gradually disappears. I am guessing it is to do with MAVProxy .cache but not very sure about it. Can someone help me how to fix this problem. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Gopal

I’m pretty sure it gets the map interactively from one of the mapping services (like google maps).  If you’re running this on a virtual machine, maybe it doesn’t have access to the internet?  Try a ping www.google.com and see if that works maybe.

Hi Randy,

Thanks for your reply. I tried pinging google and the internet is connected, but the map still doesn't load. Before I started getting this problem, I remember running the SITL from the command line and for some reason, the program became unresponsive. So I killed the application and started again. From then on, the map is not loading.  is it something to do with the cache or something?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Gopal

Hi Gopal,

Just change to a different map service. You will find a "View" menu on
the map window which allows you to choose what service to use. Try the
OviHybrid service.

I may be experiencing something similar to Gopal.  Now, when I start SITL, I will see the map come up showing images of the default location (in Australia), then it'll say "Map downloading 17" or so and count down from that.  After that, it'll show a full map of images of my specified location, as desired.  But then, when that seems to be fully loaded, the bar will say "Map downloading 35" and progressively clear my map to "Unavailable".  It doesn't seem like a connection issue.

I have been running SITL for a couple of months without seeing this, but all of a sudden for the last few days I can't seem to avoid this.

Also, I don't seem to see a "View" menu on the map window - it's just a blank white bar.  I'm pretty sure I have seen it before.

Gopal was nice enough to send me a tip - if you maximize the window you can get the "view" menu.  Changing my source to Ovi seems to make my problem go away.  Is there any way to set a default map source so I don't have to do it every time?

yes, set the environment variable MAP_SERVICE. For example, put this in
your $HOME/.bashrc

export MAP_SERVICE=OviHybrid

I ran into the same problem, and tracked it down to an issue with the YahooSat map service (the default in MAVProxy). The maps*.yimg.com endpoints are responding (very slowly) with HTTP 503/504 errors. It seems Yahoo! may have finally gotten around to decommissioning their tile servers—they shut down their maps API in 2011.

I've submitted a PR retiring the Yahoo* map services and making OviHybrid the default (which, coincidentally, is what the Yahoo! Maps app now uses):

Cheers,

Clay
