3DR Services crashes when connecting from Tower

I realize there's a 3DR services mailing list but there doesn't seem to be much activity lately and since my issue is triggered by Tower, I decided to try here first.

The problem I'm having is that when I plug in my radio (900mhz) to either of my Android tablets (Nexus 7 1st Gen and Nexus 9) and then hit "Connect" on Tower I get a message saying "3DR services has stopped working" and connection is never established. The weird thing is that DroidPlanner 2 works great on both tablets with the same radio and is able to connect to the radio on the Quad and perform most functions. The radios also work when connected to my Mac and QGroundControl.

I was having the issue with the version of Tower and 3DR Services I found on Google Play, but I also tried updating to the Beta version (by joining the G+ community) and the issue is still present.

Has anyone seen anything like this? any ideas on how I might fix it?

Hi Juan,

You probably have Droidplanner 2 set to handle the USB connection from the radio by default. To clear this, go into Settings > Apps > Droidplanner 2 and clear the default associations.

Then reconnect the radios and a message should pop up asking which app you'd like to launch with the radio. Select 3DR Services.
