I might be alone in this, but I cannot stand the anonymous chat option... I've tried to think of a positive reason for why it exists, but I cannot think of anything. In a real diplomacy game, there is no way for you to anonymously talk to another player... Why is this an option in Droidippy?

Btw, huge fan of the app and have been playing for 6+ months. Great work on developing it. Just wanted to share some feedback

The ability to not only post anonymously but even impersonate other powers is an available option on other servers. It presents fascinating possibilities... That no one will play because it's just not worth the headache.

I think it is useful to sow seeds of doubt, by telling someone some truths, and thereby getting them to mistrust a neighbour.

Unfortunately though it just provides cover for people who want to hurl abuse and pester other players.

I like anonymous chat (or what had been called "grey press" on Rob Lowe judge games) Especially anonymous broadcasts, which can be used to tell jokes about the game, without revealing which power it is coming from.

Abuse and pestering should not be tolerated, whether anonymous, non-anonymous, broadcast, or personal. My suggestion, if feasible, would be a "report abuse" feature directly in the game (much like forums have a "report abuse") function. If abuse is reported, a moderator could intervene, without revealing the power that had actually complained (for example, the moderator was reviewing communications, or somehow bad language was flagged even if it wasn't.)

I strongly feel ejections should only be used as an ultimate last resort for this hobby, but if a player is using abusive language, don't just eject him/her from the game, but eject him/her from all games using this tool, and try to prevent them from coming back.

But please don't take away anonymous chat!!!

Nothing is changing on droidippy. :-)

Diplicity is designed to be highly customizable, so the facility for anonymous chat is available in the software. How available it will be in games will depend on the player community.

A related question (and a very loaded question if this hasn't been discussed)

After games complete, are chat logs between players, as well as the authors of anonymous press, made public after games conclude? (It wasn't in the Rob Lowe judges, they were pretty much thrown out unless judgekeepers went through the email logs.)

I know there are PROs and CONs to this, but among this forum community, one huge pro is that if any player suspects two opponents of being the same player using seperate accounts, it will be easy to bust them after the game concludes.....

No, private press isn't and won't be publicized in droidippy.

On the judges, there is no organized log of press to speak of - just raw logs of inbound and outbound mail. These logs include passwords and are not suitable for publishing. A game moderator can "watch all press" and collect an archive that way. USAK collects and logs outbound messages in a MySQL database. These are only made public when the players have agreed to it in advance of the game.

Martin and I haven't talked about archive capabilities in diplicity yet. I want the ability to access archives subject to permissions so that league owners can police their leagues for abuse and administrators in educational leagues can grade students on their work. While it's conceivable that some games might be made public, I don't see that as a popular option and I certainly wouldn't want to make it the default.

The first couple of games I GM'd (back in the early 1990s) I had press turned on. It immediately became boring to me, and when I started to mass-GM judge games, I turned it off.

I still remember one time a player complained that two powers seemed suspiciously similar in their press style, and their actions seemed way too coordinated. I immediately forwarded the concern to the judge keeper and turned watch press on. When I checked email the next morning, the judge keeper had booted both powers, and blacklisted both accounts, after having gone through the emails and seeing the two powers weren't writing too each other...

So maintaining the logs is a great thing. Having an option before the game of what to do with the logs afterwards (public or private) is a great solution..

Also, back before Gmail, email headers used to have the IP address of the sender. So, if the two players were using the same internet connection that would show in the logs. That was considered a trade secret of judge keepers back in the day, so it wouldn't have been cited as a reason for the ban. Access to IP addresses is a primary motivation for adding a web interface to a judge. And logging IP addresses is how most web based adjudicators detect duplicate position cheats.

I've been running a Diplomacy judge for years, though, and players only want press published to make a game a showcase game, not to deter cheating. Most players are afraid that having their press published will reveal their tells. :-)

Is there an option to turn off anonymous chat that I am missing? I am trying to introduce folks who have only played in real life and want to better simulate that experience. I don't think the anonymous chat should be eliminated entirely, but it would be nice to have the option to turn it off for a more board game like experience. I only see the option for chat on/off/anonymous only.
It would be great to make the options for chat (in both conference and private) on/off/anonymous only/anonymous off.

I have always found annon messages to be frustrating, infuriating, and mind boggling... I hate it when I receive them. I appreciate what my allies/enemies go thru when I send them.
Or as Winston Churchill said "a well placed word,.." ;-)

Anon chat is nothing but trouble, it's supposed to be used to give information to someone without revealing identity, even if it's fake info. But what it's actually used for is immature kids using it to swear and insult, and sense people who insult without swearing can't be banned, they have had a free reign to do insult ad they want, even though some insults can be worse than swear words

The rules say that if you keep on spamming insults after being told to stop, or if you are generally an asshole, you can be banned.

Thus it is reportable, merits warnings and unless it stops immediately even banning.

Well that's a relief! I thought only swear words get you banned.

Well, if you have the chance when you do an update to make anon chat not allowed (as an option), I know some folks would use it.  This would mimic the board game experience a little better. I think it should be an option to disallow anon chat, not the default or requirement.  I just don't see it as an option at all (though anon only is).
I also love the app. By far the best Diplomacy simulator out there.

I think it should be removed overall or not allowed in conference

In game #47855 the German player made several personal insults even after I asked him to stop. It is in the private chat between Germany and Russia.
