Can I Batch Change File Extensions?

Hi all,

In fact, batch rename file extensions are not difficult, just use a command similar to the following example.
rename *.jpg *.webp
but if we want to rename thousands of photos in a folder, and all photos have different formats, use a command is not good,
Because this will change all the images to the same extension.

The application can't batch rename file extensions, so how do I rename the file when I find the correct extension?

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason,

DROID's purpose is to report the file formats it finds within an arbitrary collection of files. Changing those files, whether the content or the filenames, is beyond its scope.

There are various approaches to the problem you describe using command line/shell processes and I can certainly provide some pointers, but can I just check, are you trying to change the file formats, or are you simply trying to 'normalize' the file extensions alone?

Hi David,

I don't need Image converter, I want to keep file formats,
Also don't want to change the file name,
I just want to change file extension to match Image formats itself.

Thanks

Jason

You can do this in Adobe Bridge if you have that application.

thanks david

But this is a batch rename tool,
If a folder has multiple formats of images, it not work
because it rename all images to the same extension.

That’s ok, don’t worry. I still think Double Commander can help you in what you are doing. Its is batch rename, but its really flexible. If the folder has multiple formats, and one of the extensions is lets say .db and you want to change it into .new, then its easy to do – see below.

With this set up it will only change your .db extension and will ignore other extension.

Best

Jan
