Problems with Touchpad and 'pointing-devices

Hello,

I have the most annoying problem with my HP laptop.  Virtually every thing I write gets messed about with my palm as I am no touch typer.

 

I'm running Linux Mint 15/Mate and have installed gpointing-device-settings to disable my touchpad and invested in a 2.4GHz mouse. However, this seems to only work for a while, before the touchpad starts working again, and I end up typing wherever the touchpad sends me..

Any help would be gratefully received.
