If you are installing landscape block in your yard or driveway, you may be wondering if there are other bonding options besides mortar. Is it possible to use adhesive? Will it last in the weather? Does regular construction adhesive work for landscape block, or is there another option?
However, for the last few decades, landscape contractors have been using adhesive instead of mortar as they build stone walls from concrete blocks. Adhesive, also known simply as glue, is easier to use than mortar. Not only do you not have to mix it when applying, but it dries in only a few hours, unlike the several days that mortar takes to dry. Adhesive can also be applied when you would least expect it to be possible, like in extreme conditions such as wet, dry, or cold weather.
Not all adhesive is made equal. Construction and landscape adhesives are distinctly different. Construction adhesive is made for bonding various types of materials in an indoor, out-of-the-weather environment. Landscape adhesive, on the other hand, is specifically made for bonding materials in an outdoor environment.
SuperWET adhesive is ideal for adhering retaining wall blocks and stair treads, especially if it is late in the season or you live in a wet area. It also is great for projects that will be subjected to heavy loads, such as stair treads or pool coping.
Some adhesives come in ready-to-squeeze tubes, but others require a caulk gun for application. Before you buy a caulk gun, you should check your landscape adhesive to know if your gun needs to have a particular thrust ratio. Typical caulking guns run from a low of a 3:1 thrust ratio up to a high of an 18:1 thrust ratio. Some landscape adhesives require a specific thrust ratio.

I am seriusly thinking of making my own retaining wall blocks from the molds I am thinking of buying off ebay. I can buy 4 molds for about 80 dollars including shipping. In NJ, I visited varoius garden places including Lowes and Homedepot and the 600 blocks I need would cost me between 1100 to 1500 excluding the delivery. Plus, I do not need all at once so that means I have to get them delivered in batches and I have to pay for the delivery each time. I could make about 4 blocks with 1 bag of concrete(80lb) and I would like to know whether it is a good idea. I know it will take up a lot of time but I am not in a hurry to have them today. I could make 8 blocks per week and cure them for another week before I can place them in the garden. I have about 4 trees in the front yard and each of them need 60 blocks to have a nice retaining wall built around them. Please tell me that I am not crazy to get such an idea.
Did any of you do this sort of thing? I also would like to make my own stepping stones for my backyard walkway.
Padma.
All in all, I'd say that the only downside to making my own blocks is the monotony of production. It's well worth the tedium though; each block is different and the peat in hypertufa breaks down to make the blocks look pitted and old. The nooks and crannies are good moss collectors.
When you do the stitching on your landscape blocks how do you handle the angled pieces. I know that you changed the colors between blue and green but would that interruption in your stitching line be noticeable on the angled pieces?
Long story short part of the wall couldn't be done so I have 200 blocks leftover. Lowes will take em back like anything else, right? If so, I was wondering if they offer a "pickup" service for the same $75 fee as delivery to bring em back. Otherwise I'll have to hand load a pallet in to a truck and bring them one at a time. If I have to, I will obviously but figured it doesn't hurt to ask.
To counter-balance this loss of human scale within cities like Dublin, the capital of Ireland, we are proposing the concept of City Lungs_ Lansdacpe Blocks. This concept introduces a new typology of a multi-story public outdoor space accessible to all, on site which are intended for high rise development of office, hotels and shopping stores in city centre. These landscape blocks have the potential to change peoples opinion of high-rise buildings to a more positive ones if on some development sites these public spaces would be built for public use.
Adding steps to a garden or backyard is a great alternative to sloping paths. The nice part? You can install them yourself! Follow this step-by-step guide to create steps with segmental retaining wall (SRW) blocks yourself.
Keep in mind that different blocks have different locking mechanisms that may protrude under the block. To get around this, remove a bit of your screeded sand to allow for the bumps to be leveled easier later on.
It's important to note that, when placing the blocks, do not slide them on your base sand. Instead, set them directly down, gently rubbing against the previous block each time.
Once the entire course of blocks have been set down, some adjustments need to be made. Using a level and a rubber mallet, ensure that the blocks are laying consistently side-to-side, and level from front to back with no high or low spots in between.
Once the bottom course of blocks is leveled and in line with each other, you can start placing the caps on the blocks. Depending on the shape and length of your step, some caps may have to be cut using a diamond-blade saw.
When all the caps have been dry fit, remove them and ensure they stay in the proper order. Once the course of blocks below have been swept to remove any debris, place two or three generous beads of concrete adhesive on top. Be sure to stay at least a couple of inches away from the front of the block to prevent the glue from squeezing out and being visible.
