Now that we all know about the killer pen FB page, we can all keep an eye out for more driving equines at the killer pen. I have been told that they frequently have driving equines available for rescue.

If driving horses are rescued, we are only about an hour away from the Kauffman site and would be happy to drive down and bring them back to our place for anyone of our driving friends and keep them for several days, free of charge.

Has anyone checked to see if they’d take less for this horse? He sure sounds nice….and like I said, we’d go get him. This could be a chip-in project.

Sounds wonderful.  But the cost of shipping from TX to CA is prohibitive for me :(  I hope he finds a wonderful home.

That is very generous. Also there may be some others that could be great for driving as well

Well, think about it.

I actually drove from Los Angles County to Montgomery Alabama to retrieve a pair of hackney cross fillies.

I'm glad I did.  I love them.

He’s pretty tempting, but I checked driving distance and it’s 1,700 miles.  Assuming a hauler would charge $1 a mile – it’d kill me.  I hope he finds a home.  He’s haunting me.  L

There are horse owners who do not have the $$$ to feed them, is one reason. There are lots of horse thefts, as a way to make easy $$$ and they sell them to the killer pens.

In fact, one afternoon we had an incident which was an apparently an attempt to take our horses. Thankfully, our two dogs made the fellow climb up on our horse trailer to get away for them. Later I learned there were two other fellows outside waiting with an open horse trailer. Our property is lined with large trees and what’s on the road is not always visible.

Also, killer-pen buyers show up at all the horse auctions and buy whatever doesn’t sell. Sad but true.

Is there anyone heading from the Dallas area to parts West?  Want to volunteer to drive him?  Maybe Sandi could meet you in El Paso?

He sounds like a really nice fellow.

Also, when I drive cross-country with a horse trailer, I stay at Horse Motel International.  The prices are reasonable, often including a room for me and my dog, and I feel safe for myself, my horse and my rig.  There is a good one in Deming, NM.

Oddly enough, I’m flying to El Paso tomorrow. I’ll be staying in my brother’s home and if needed, we could probably help while I’m there. He’s a city folk so there’s no room for horses.

Catherine, you have my cell phone number….I’ll also be “email capable” for contact. My son would be the one who would drive to the pens to pick up the horse. He’s as close as my phone and he’s already consented to do it.

I placed a request for bid on uship.  If I can get a transporter to drive him from Kaufman (El Paso?) TX to Aromas, CA for $1K or less, I’ll bid on the halflinger gelding.  If I can arrange the transport from TX to my house – can someone pick him up and hold him until the transporter can pick him up?

Thanks!
Sandi

Someone in the Dallas area must know SOMEONE who will drive the haflinger to El Paso.

Sandi, do you have a trailer?  If not, is there who will help pick him up in El Paso?

Where is the gelding located?  In Kaufman, TX?   I have asked for a transport bid from Kaufman, TX to my home in Aromas, CA (Monterey area).  If he is located at a kill pen in Kaufman, is there someone nearby that can pick him up and hold him until I can get a transporter to pick him up for delivery to me in California.    I can only pull this off if I can get a transporter to deliver him to me for $1K or less.  Does anyone know when the bid deadline is?   Thanks!

I think the deadline has been extended, but you’ll have to look at the FB/Kaufffman Kill Pen page. My son can pick him up and bring him here, It’ll be free for a couple of days. After that, you may have to pay some board. I’m leaving tomorrow morning for El Paso. No horse place where I’m staying.

PS Has anyone seen the Hackney driving pony on the FB/Bastrop Louisiana Kill Pen site?

Sandi,

Just let me know. BTW, as list owner and moderator, I must ask your to delete all the past emails after you hit the reply key and send your new post. Kind of like I did here. That way everyone else who isn’t in this discussion and not interested, isn’t inundated with long emails.

Did I hear a thank you?

The man who trained me and my mares (those many years ago) had herd of Halffies and that’s what I learned on. That was Mr. Tom O’Carroll to whom I’m eternally grateful for changing my life by teaching me to drive. Hope you can get that Halffie!!!

I am intrigued by how the "kill" people know that these are driving horses/ponies.  Do the owners
relinquish them with disclosure?

I live very close to New Holland, PA.  We are in Amish territory.  I am assuming that Amish bring
horses that are known to drive, but other folks?

It is sad that anyone would put their ponies/horses in this situation.  What a sad, sad situation.

That would be a great question to ask some of the people who work at the kill pen. The FB page for the Louisiana Kill Pen has a phone number and they also have a Hackney pony mare that drives. She looks thin, but with some TLC she’d probably be quite lovely. I hate that I can’t bring home every single one. But have to accept that not everyone loves and cherishes their horses like we do. Because we drive at a distance from the horse and cannot actually touch it, our relationship with our horses is a bit different than riders…..IMHO.

Really? I think that we drivers "touch" our horses very often, with a
soft whip and a voice. They know it
is "me" who is talking to them, touching them.

Still sad that so many think they are loved, then "BAM", off to the
sale.
