This already works for most Linux distributions. Those images are hybrid, meaning they work on both CD as well as USB without conversion. The distros do this using isolinux, which is part of syslinux.
You can also chainload using grub if you have a custom img with grub already on it. See https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GRUB2/Chainloading#ISO_images.
