Note: The class implementing the interface must declare all methods in the interface with a compatible signature. A class can implement multiple interfaces which declare a method with the same name. In this case, the implementation must follow the signature compatibility rules for all the interfaces. So covariance and contravariance can be applied.

In computing, an interface is a shared boundary across which two or more separate components of a computer system exchange information. The exchange can be between software, computer hardware, peripheral devices, humans, and combinations of these.[1] Some computer hardware devices, such as a touchscreen, can both send and receive data through the interface, while others such as a mouse or microphone may only provide an interface to send data to a given system.[2]

Hardware interfaces exist in many components, such as the various buses, storage devices, other I/O devices, etc. A hardware interface is described by the mechanical, electrical, and logical signals at the interface and the protocol for sequencing them (sometimes called signaling).[3] A standard interface, such as SCSI, decouples the design and introduction of computing hardware, such as I/O devices, from the design and introduction of other components of a computing system, thereby allowing users and manufacturers great flexibility in the implementation of computing systems.[3] Hardware interfaces can be parallel with several electrical connections carrying parts of the data simultaneously or serial where data are sent one bit at a time.[4]

A software interface may refer to a wide range of different types of interface at different "levels". For example, an operating system may interface with pieces of hardware. Applications or programs running on the operating system may need to interact via data streams, filters, and pipelines.[5] In object oriented programs, objects within an application may need to interact via methods.[6]

Interfaces between software components can provide constants, data types, types of procedures, exception specifications, and method signatures. Sometimes, public variables are also defined as part of an interface.[8]

In some object-oriented languages, especially those without full multiple inheritance, the term interface is used to define an abstract type that acts as an abstraction of a class. It contains no data, but defines behaviours as method signatures. A class having code and data for all the methods corresponding to that interface and declaring so is said to implement that interface.[9] Furthermore, even in single-inheritance-languages, one can implement multiple interfaces, and hence can be of different types at the same time.[10]

An interface is thus a type definition; anywhere an object can be exchanged (for example, in a function or method call) the type of the object to be exchanged can be defined in terms of one of its implemented interfaces or base-classes rather than specifying the specific class. This approach means that any class that implements that interface can be used.[citation needed] For example, a dummy implementation may be used to allow development to progress before the final implementation is available. In another case, a fake or mock implementation may be substituted during testing. Such stub implementations are replaced by real code later in the development process.

Though interfaces can contain many methods, they may contain only one or even none at all. For example, the Java language defines the interface Readable that has the single read() method; various implementations are used for different purposes, including BufferedReader, FileReader, InputStreamReader, PipedReader, and StringReader. Marker interfaces like Serializable contain no methods at all and serve to provide run-time information to generic processing using Reflection.[11]

The use of interfaces allows for a programming style called programming to the interface. The idea behind this approach is to base programming logic on the interfaces of the objects used, rather than on internal implementation details. Programming to the interface reduces dependency on implementation specifics and makes code more reusable.[12]

A user interface is a point of interaction between a computer and humans; it includes any number of modalities of interaction (such as graphics, sound, position, movement, etc.) where data is transferred between the user and the computer system.

As you've already learned, objects define their interaction with the outside world through the methods that they expose. Methods form the object's interface with the outside world; the buttons on the front of your television set, for example, are the interface between you and the electrical wiring on the other side of its plastic casing. You press the "power" button to turn the television on and off.

Implementing an interface allows a class to become more formal about the behavior it promises to provide. Interfaces form a contract between the class and the outside world, and this contract is enforced at build time by the compiler. If your class claims to implement an interface, all methods defined by that interface must appear in its source code before the class will successfully compile.

Among so-called "next generation" battery technologies, lithium metal batteries (LMBs) enabled by solid-state electrolytes are considered key to achieve rechargeable batteries with higher energy density and safety than current lithium ion batteries (LIBs). This article briefly evaluates various aspects of polymer electrolytes from history, macromolecular architecture, material classification, and electrode optimization, with special emphasis on solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) and single ion conducting polymeric electrolytes. Representative interfaces and interphases as well as corresponding engineering strategies adopted for the anticipated goals are briefly summarized, including various approaches adopted to mitigate the shortcomings at the interfaces. Significant weight should be given for research and development of SPEs, as they could be an enabler for solid-state LMBs with attractive performance and made by comparatively easy electrode and cell processing techniques.

Kalani (December 2, 2009 6:41 AM) Fred, I don't know why there should be any fear of overloading here (though you've put your finger on some major problems with this language). Especially with the poor String/toString example, somebody should have immediately seen a need to introduce overloading. Hopefully there's a better justification for accepting the unnecessary time/space overhead (and more importantly the logical/reasoning overhead) that goes along with runtime type-tag checking.

It's a shame -- the authors of Go should have read Mark Jones's dissertation on qualified types. Without polymorphic recursion, they could statically construct all necessary "interfaces" for primitive types and have a much nicer 'toString' function (not to mention a million other examples).

These guys missed a great chance to seriously advance the state of "system programming."

I don't know whether Go is the first language to use this technique, but it's certainly not a common one.


Emerald computed lookup tables dynamically; we called them "AbCon vectors", because they converted from the abstract type (aka interface), known at compile time, to the concrete type of the object (aka class), which was sometimes know only at runtime. We also cached the AbCons.

Emerald also did typechecking more or less as you have described it in Go, with interfaces being structural (programmers didn't have to claim that they implemented an interface, they just had to do it), checking being static when possible but otherwise dynamic, and allowing run-time type interrogation and checked run-time conversions. Emerald also had methods with multiple return values and "comma assignments".

You can create an interface VPC endpoint to connect to services powered by AWS PrivateLink, including many AWS services. For an overview, see AWS PrivateLink concepts and Access AWS services through AWS PrivateLink.

For each subnet that you specify from your VPC, we create an endpoint network interface in the subnet and assign it a private IP address from the subnet address range. An endpoint network interface is a requester-managed network interface; you can view it in your AWS account, but you can't manage it yourself.

Create a security group that allows the resources in your VPC to communicate with the endpoint network interfaces for the VPC endpoint. To ensure that tools such as the AWS CLI can make requests over HTTPS from resources in the VPC to the AWS service, the security group must allow inbound HTTPS traffic.

If, in Step 5, you selected the service name for Amazon S3, and if you want to configure private DNS support, select Additional settings, Enable DNS name. When you make this selection, it also automatically selects Enable private DNS only for inbound endpoint. You can configure private DNS with an inbound Resolver endpoint only for interface endpoints for Amazon S3. If you do not have a gateway endpoint for Amazon S3 and you select Enable private DNS only for inbound endpoint, you'll receive an error when you attempt the final step in this procedure.

For Subnets, select one subnet per Availability Zone from which you'll access the AWS service. You can't select multiple subnets from the same Availability Zone. We create an endpoint network interface in each subnet that you select. By default, we select IP addresses from the subnet IP address ranges and assign them to the endpoint network interfaces. To choose the IP addresses for an endpoint network interface, select Designate IP addresses and enter an IPv4 address from the subnet address range. If the endpoint service supports IPv6, you can also enter an IPv6 address from the subnet address range.
