After Roran's return to Carvahall in the second book and the absolutely badass events that followed said return, I couldn't help but think that Roran would make an awesome Dragon Rider. The thought of Roran charging into battle atop a dragon wielding a hammer, fighting side by side his cousin was my main motivation to continue reading the series. . So you can imagine my disappointment when Roran's (admittedly justified) disapproval of magic was revealed. Because we all know you can't be Rider and NOT be a magician. . However some part of me still believes that if Roran were presented to dragon egg, it would hatch. Perhaps becoming a Rider would change his mind about magic. Or maybe if he was presented to the egg prior to Eldest. . What do you guys think? Would Roran make a good Dragon Rider?

The Dragon Riders are the humans and elves who bonded with dragon hatchlings, as well as a kind of police force existing in the time before Galbatorix's rise to power. They began with the first Eragon, an elf who adopted a newly hatched dragon during a massive war between their two species. Their rule ended 100 years before the events of Eragon with the death of Vrael.[7][10]

In the books, the dragons are grouped into those bonded to Riders and wild dragons. The wild dragons are far more fierce, while the bonded dragons are more intellectual. All dragons hatch from eggs, in which they can remain for a very long time; once hatched they have a nearly infinite lifespan and continue growing their whole lives. They can breathe fire and reproduce at about six months old.[7] When a dragon dies, it has the option to transfer its consciousness into a diamond-like organ inside its body called an Eldunarí. If it disgorges its "heart of hearts" before its death, the dragon has no choice but to retreat into it when it dies. Such Eldunarí will live on until another creature destroys them.[9] Dragons are a variety of colors, which do not appear to be related to their parents' colors.[4][10]

I think I know what happened to Eragon the first, he wasn't still alive during the rise of galbotorix because he wasn't technically a dragon rider. Hear me out the riders dragons had spells/ blessings in the ancient language said to the egg which is what made it a riders egg. Likewise the gedewy insignia and the pact came after Eragons dragon had hatched. As such he was not immortal like dragon riders after him and passed away naturally.

I mean dragons are described as beeing such powerfull beeings, like elfs, and then humans are like eh, so, my question is, since they are so powerfull, how can they just die if the rider dies? Dragon riders only live longer lifes because of the dragons, dragons that lived before the riders, where basicaly immortal! I ve been thinking about it in the last few days and I dont understand

The Dragon Riders became peacemakers and ambassadors between all races. The next 2,600 years were a Golden Age for the Riders, elves, and dwarves (and in the latter portion, for the humans as well). Much of what we know of the skulblakya comes as a result of this partnership between Riders and dragons.

Dragons do not partner for life. Rider bonded dragons considered it a great accomplishment to mate with wild counterparts (more danger, less decorum). Females lay one, two, or three eggs at any one time. Because they are effectively immortal, there is no upper limit to the number they can lay over their lifetimes. Overall, dragons have a low fertility rate, a natural result of their biology. This is a good thing, otherwise Alagaësia would be inundated by large, hungry predators.

So it is a great honor and ultimate sign of trust when a dragon entrusts their Eldunarí to someone. (A Rider may ask their bonded dragon if it has given its heart of hearts away, but it is impolite to for someone else to inquire.)

Wild elder dragons often wait until hatchlings are mature enough to understand the responsibility of safeguarding their Eldunarí before informing them of the existence of the heart of hearts. The Dragon Riders have a different tradition. Teachers typically wait until the relationship between a Rider and bonded partner has developed for several years before informing them of the Eldunarí. This is a preventative measure to lessen the risk that a young dragon disgorges his Eldunarí just to impress or appease his Rider.

A dragon must be careful not to expel his/her Eldunarí too young because the size of a heart of hearts is directly proportional to the size of its owner when expelled. If removed too early, the mind and soul inside cannot grow and mature, limited by the size of the Eldunarí itself. (For a detailed description of the process of disgorging an Eldunarí, see page 695 of a first edition Brisingr.)

No longer dependent on food or water, Umaroth explained that Eldunarí draw their energy from light, a factor considered in choosing the location for the Vault of Souls. This is contradicted by Oromis in Brisingr Deluxe, pages 635-636, where he states that the source of their energy is unknown to both Riders and dragons, but that it is a magical process:

For thousands of years, dragons kept their hearts of hearts in Du Fells Nángoröth. When the Dragon Riders established themselves on Vroengard, both wild and bound dragons began entrusting their Eldunarí to the repository in Doru Araeba. (Galbatorix seized most of these after the Battle of Doru Araeba.)

Every one hundred years, the elves perform the Agaetí Blödhren, a celebration and renewal of the pact between the dragons and Riders. During the festivities, Caretakers Iduna and Nëya, who guard, maintain, and embody the magical pact, dance together. Each bears a portion of a giant tattoo that eventually merges into a spectral dragon during the ritual. This specter is the reflection of the dragon race itself and is capable of spontaneous magical acts in times of need. There was very great need three times, once before the events of the Inheritance Cycle and twice after.

Then Galbatorix rose to corrupt power nearly seven hundred years after the humans joined the Riders. With the help of the Shade Durza, he enslaved the Eldunarí of the first Rider and dragon he killed and subsequently set about corrupting as many dragons and Riders as he could. Those he could not convince were killed until only Glaedr and Oromis, who went into hiding, remained. He systematically eradicated the wild dragons, too. The dwarves and elves were forced to withdraw as well.

Eragon requested that the dwarves and Urgals be added to the Dragon Rider pact. The spectral dragon agreed (its third boon), thereby equalizing the balance of power throughout Alagaësia and inexorably linking each of the four Rider races to the fortunes of its fellows and the land itself. As before, if one were to decline, so would all the rest. Additionally, Eragon proposed games, open to all races, specifically to provide Urgals with a way to prove their valor against opponents without engaging in war.

So, how common would it have been in the time of the old riders for children to become riders if their parents had been? And in that case, how often would they have had similar dragons to their parents?

As we know, Brom's Saphira was blue and Eragon's Saphira is too. Morzan's dragon, as indicated by his sword, was red, and Thorn, Murtagh's dragon, is red as well. Is this just a coincidence or would it have been common? Did riders even commonly have kids?

Like a lot of movies about dragons, when "Eragon" begins it seems to have a lot of potential. In the world of "Eragon," dragon riders were once the keepers of the peace. But now they're all gone, thanks to a rider who betrayed his colleagues. An evil King Galbatorix (John Malkovich) now rules over Alagaësia.

When we catch up with the hero of the story, who is conveniently named Eragon (Ed Speleers), he's a simple farmboy, who finds a dragon egg on his morning hunt. Of course he doesn't know it's a dragon egg until it hatches. In no time, the dragon Saphira (voice by Rachel Weisz) bonds with Eragon who becomes her rider, and it's up to both of them to fight the evil King.

There are some remarkable sequences in Eragon, although I was never blown out of my seat -- most of them involving the dragon Saphira. But for me, the derivative nature of the plot kept me from falling into the story. By derivative, I'm talking about "Star Wars: A New Hope." Here are just a few similarities:

Unknown to him, Aram bears within him a gift so old and rare that many people would kill him for it, and there are others who would twist him to use for their own sinister purposes. These magics are so potent that Aram earns a place at an academy for warrior mages training to earn for themselves the greatest place of honor among the armies of men: dragon riders.

Until he discovers a dark secret: dragons do not tolerate weakness among their kin, killing the young they deem flawed. Moved by pity, Holt defies the Order, rescues a doomed egg and vows to protect the blind dragon within.

The Dragon Riders (Shur'tugal in the Ancient Language) were a coalition of elves, humans, and dragons created originally to forge peace and order between the elves and dragons, and later to protect all of Alagaësia.

The Riders were created because treaties between the elves and dragons would prove useless to stop fighting: a signed piece of paper meant nothing to a dragon. So, an irrevocable bond was wrought by the elves and the dragons; the elves provided the structure of the spell and the dragons provided the strength, thus creating the Dragon Riders. When a fleet of humans sailed across the sea thousands of years later, they too were added to the elite order of the Dragon Riders.

Because of how useful Eragon I and Bid'Daum proved to be, the dragons began giving the elves two or three eggs a year, and the baby dragons chose to hatch for the elf (or, later, human) most suited to that dragon. The Dragon Riders' duty, in the beginning, was to keep the peace between the Elves and Dragons. Their duty soon expanded from keeping peace between just those two races to all the races and governments in Alagaësia. Though it is not specifically mentioned, many speculated that the Dragon Riders' position of power eventually led to their downfall. The Dragon Riders themselves were above the laws of the lands. They kept the peace between all races and in between races, though their methods were sometimes termed as "meddling" by the dwarves. The Dragon Riders were not just the soldier-diplomats between races, they were also the foremost of scholars.
