If I do a backup image of my C drive, reboot, load windows live mail, open
contacts and add a new contact, then restore my C drive I find the new
contact is no longer there. This indicates to me that while windows live mail
IS storing most of its data on the D drive it IS NOT storing the conacts
there, if it were a drive C restore would not remove any new contacts. It looks like windows live mail is storing its contacts somewhere on the C
drive.
Ths is idiotic since I changed its data storage to drive D some time ago.Anyone know why when you change windows live mails storage diretcory to
another drive it still stores its contacts on the C drive ?Where on the C drive it stores them is a mystery. I have set the folder
options to show all system files ect. I can find a couple contacts
directories on the C drive but they are empty.ThanksTom

Sorry, I'm new to T-bird, and am not a geek. I have tried all kinds of instructions about how to copy windows live mail contact list to import into T-bird. They are not working. I get two error messages.

Thanks for your reply, but your solution did not work. I have downloaded T-bird version 78.5.1 on Dec 9, 2020. I am using Windows 10, with the most recent updates. I did an export of the contact list from my Windows Live Mail and saved it as a VCF file (as you suggested )onto a thumb drive, which I then removed from my desk top and plugged into my note book. When I then click on T-bird Tools, I get the Import box. When I select Address Book then Next, the next Import box allows me to select vCard file (.vcf). I then get a "Select address book file" with the name of the file I saved on the thumb drive (it's actually a folder titled "VCF Address Book"). The blank field box at the bottom asks for a file name, which I oblige by filling in "VCF Address Book". The only next option is to click on the "Open" button which results in presenting my whole list of each contact. There are no more option buttons to click on but another "Open" button. When I click on that, nothing happens. Period. I seem to run into stone walls. Exporting and Importing all sounds very straight forward but for some reason does not seem to be working for me. I really want to get this to work so I can switch over to T-bird. Again I like what I'm seeing and am hopeful I can use T-bird without having to manually build my contact list. Hopefully all this info helps you. Thanks.

You can't import a folder of vcf files in one step. TB will only import a single vcf file, but you have to select one in the Open window. Instead of doing this for each file that represents a single contact, it's recommended to merge the vcf files into one vcf file and then import it.

Well, thank you to everyone who tried to help me solve my problem about transferring my contact list from Windows Live Mail to TB. As it turned out, being not a geek (with ALL respect) I wound up building my TB contact list by the old school method, that being copy and paste, copy and paste..... The effort took time, but the result works just fine. So now I can move along and get comfortable using TB as my default email. Thanks to all for making this such a very nice email client.

I discovered the answer. I was syncing my old windows 7 phone with live mail on my PC (contacts and calendar). To do the same for IPhone. go to settings, mail/contacts/calendars, then account using Outlook.com option. Use your live mail id and password that you sign in with (that syncs to their system), Select calendar and contacts and everything worked perfectly, syncing to the IPhone. I then set Outlook as default for contacts.

Our contacts are undoubtedly the most essential components of the mailboxes. Hence, it is significant to transfer them attentively. If you do so, there will no single attribute compromised during the process.

Now, coming to the Windows Live Mail, the need to transfer contacts from them may vary from person to person. One of the prominent reasons is that most find it as an obsolete email client as compared to other email clients.

BEFORE MOVING YOUR STORE FOLDER
Before moving your store folder, decide on a location other than the default area that MS and the WLM client has
devised for you. Usually; C:Users[username]/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail.
My preference is a partition off of the main drive. Make a folder with two subfolders, then export to one of the subfolders. Give them a name, then export all your messages, contacts, & account settings to this folder. That will be a temporary backup folder
that will serve to import from once you have your client installed and move your store folder over to the other empty one.

MOVING STORE FOLDER
To move the store folder in WLM: Tools>>Options>>Advanced>>Maintainance>>Store folder. Select destination.
This should be done while your setting up the client and before all your messages have been imported.
Warning: Move to an empty folder on, preferably, a partition and not a folder that is already used for email.
your individual emails and folders will end up being duplicated and oddly named. Avoid lengthy filenames for folders as well.

No, WLM does not offer you a choice. This has to be done manually. See post #3.
All your messages and folders will be preserved from your Hotmail account when you
run WLM for the first time after a reinstall.

It can be a very messy and tedious job rebuilding the folder structure, especially if you have thousands of emails, throughout
many folders, as are mine. I can help walk you through it if you like. As long as you have the bulk of your email messages
safely backed up you will loose nothing.

Check the emails in the folders you are experiencing delays in to ensure that none of the content/messages are corrupt.
If there are corrupt emails, move them off to a separate new folder or delete them, and see if the delay behavior persists.

First of all ,thanks for your excellent illustrated posts regarding Windows Live Mail.
I can well identify with your description ,since ,like you, I have thousands of email messages and a folder structure like yours

Update: I was able to uninstall WLM (by deleting some registry keys too)and reinstall to the point where I was asked all of my setup info again, e.g. account info, passwords etc. I also had to import messages and contacts.

It sounds plausible that your folders or their structures are corrupt in some way and are in need of being rebuilt from scratch.
*****This would entail deleting everything and starting completely anew.

Now that the above has been completed and all of your email messages have been safely backed up, you can start the process of rebuilding all of your folders and subfolder structures for both your web mail based email clients and the WLM client storage.

For the sake of being thorough, disconnect your internet connection prior to installing WLM. Once you have installed your
WLM client and run it, you will notice that there is nothing in there.
This will be your starting point for rebuilding all your new folders and subfolders.
From here on in we will be using windows explorer for the heavy lifting and moving.
