501c3 is a complicated process. If MFC accepts your group/project as
affiliated with us, you would fall under ours. That would allow you
to move forward now with all energy directed to your project.
Later, if you wanted to spin off into a separate group you could still
do that. But being under our initial sponsorship would permit
immediate tax-exempt contributions ear-marked for your project.
It will require a Board decision, of course. Woody and I are in
sincere support of your efforts, but we would need consensus of the
full Board. I think the great enthusiasm and efforts of your group
will facilitate acceptance. The only worry of the Board is that our
leadership is stretched almost too thin to support existing projects.

leadership.
