Just came on yr site today - quite enjoyed the Taylor-Oxley piece. Not sure if I like the phrase "Total Piano" - it raises some bounadry questions. If it can include Few/Burrell/Pullen(?)/Weston(?), then would it also include, say Taylor, Tapscott, Walton? Sun Ra? Why or why not?

But what you're getting at, or what I've 'gotten' previously & am now applying to yr phrase, is Jaki Byard's conscious, intentional summoning & mixing of the history of jazz piano in his solos. Another pianist who regularly brought that sort of sensibility to his playing - tho one would be hard pressed to show it on the basis of recorded work - was the late Ed Kelly of Oakland, CA (who stayed local & recorded rarely - w/ Michael White, Pharoah S, & has one record under his own name on Theresa where what I'm thinking about might be best heard)

anyhoos- am enjoying reading yr thoughts . . . bests!

Hello and thanks for a fantastic blog! Any chance to get this very fine looking mixtape back up again? I am a big Jaki Byard fan (my first disc was "With Strings") and would like to find out more about him. This might be a great way to discover various facets of his work. Thanks!!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album for the Marvel Studios film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Featuring the songs present on Peter Quill's mixtape in the film, the album was released by Hollywood Records on April 21, 2017. A separate film score album, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Original Score), composed by Tyler Bates, was also released by Hollywood Records on the same date. Awesome Mix Vol. 2 was the United States' eighth best-selling album of 2017 with 600,000 copies.

Tyler Bates announced that he would return to score the film by August 2015.[1] As with Guardians of the Galaxy, Bates wrote some of the score first so that Gunn could film to the music, as opposed to Bates scoring to the film.[2] Recording for the score began in January 2017 at Abbey Road Studios.[3] By August 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 writer and director James Gunn had "some ideas listed, but nothing for sure" in terms of songs to include in Quill's Awesome Mix Vol. 2 mixtape.[4] In April 2015, Gunn said he felt "a little pressure for the soundtrack because so many people loved [the first film's soundtrack] and we went platinum and all that other stuff. But I feel like the soundtrack in the second one is better."[5] In June 2015, Gunn stated that all of the songs for Awesome Mix Vol. 2 had been chosen and built into the script.[6] One of the most exciting things for Gunn in selecting the songs for the album "was knowing I would be making bands that may have been forgotten suddenly be a topic of conversation."[7] Gunn had hoped to include "She's Gone" by Hall & Oates in the film, calling it "one of the greatest pop songs ever written", but could not find a place for it,[8] as with "Teenage Lament '74" by Alice Cooper[9] In January 2016, Gunn stated that he had chosen an additional David Bowie song to appear in the film (after "Moonage Daydream" was featured in the first film) but had cut the original scene it was featured in. The inclusion would have made Bowie the only artist to be featured on both mixtapes. With Bowie's death however, Gunn hoped to find a way to include the chosen song somewhere else in the film as a "fair and appropriate" way to honor him, as Bowie was one of Gunn's idols.[10] "For Once in My Life" by Stevie Wonder was also considered for a scene.[11] Gunn called the Awesome Mix Vol. 2 "more diverse" than the first one, with "some really incredibly famous songs and then some songs that people have never heard."[12]

Sorie Kondi takes his name from the Sierra Leonean thumb piano (kondi), a close relative of the mbira which the blind musician played through a distorted amplifier while busking on the streets of Freetown in the '90s.

Chief Boima, who released Sorie Kondi's Thogolobea on Dutty Artz, has now put together a 10-year retrospective of Sorie Kondi's career in the form of The Freetown Tapes 2006-2016 mixtape, which is available now, for the price of your choice, on Bandcamp.

The seminar includes the following topics: classical piano literature; mechanics and physics of the piano; the precursors of the piano; tuning; the pianists; fingerings, phrasing, and pedals; prepared piano; notation; digital piano and bitKlavier; and contemporary piano literature. We rethink the instrument as a source of vast potential rather than a symbol of obsolescence.

Music Department chair Dan Cavanagh plays the piano with a jazz band Oct. 2 at Mix Tape Tuesdays at Urban Alchemy Coffee + Wine Bar in Arlington. Cavanagh plays once a month for the weekly event, with different band members from the Metroplex.
