Roger Ebert gave the film four out of four stars and called it "infinitely better than the book," adding, "because Hiller makes the lovers into individuals, of course we're moved by the film's conclusion. Why not?"[12] Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times was also positive, writing that although "the plotline has been honored many times... It's the telling that matters: the surfaces and the textures and the charm of the actors. And it is hard to see how these quantities could have been significantly improved upon in Love Story."[13]

Newsweek felt the film was contrived[12] and film critic Judith Crist called Love Story "Camille with bullshit".[14] Vincent Canby of The New York Times wrote, "I can't remember any movie of such comparable high-style kitsch since Leo McCarey's Love Affair (1939) and his 1957 remake, An Affair to Remember. The only really depressing thing about Love Story is the thought of all the terrible imitations that will inevitably follow it."[15] Gene Siskel gave the film two stars out of four and wrote that "whereas the novel has a built-in excuse for being spare (it is told strictly as the boy's reminiscence), the film does not. Seeing the characters in the movie ... makes us want to know something about them. We get precious little, and love by fiat doesn't work well in film."[16] Gary Arnold of The Washington Post wrote, "I found this one of the most thoroughly resistible sentimental films I've ever seen. There is scarcely a character or situation or line in the story that rings true, that suggests real simplicity or generosity of feeling, a sentiment or emotion honestly experienced and expressed."[17] Writer Harlan Ellison wrote in The Other Glass Teat, his book of collected criticism, that it was "shit". John Simon wrote that Love Story was so bad that it never once moved him.[18]

Love Story was ranked number 9 on the AFI's 100 Years...100 Passions list, which recognizes the top 100 love stories in American cinema. The film also spawned a trove of imitations, parodies, and homages in countless films, having re-energized melodrama on the silver screen, as well as helping to set the template for the modern "chick flick".

O'Neal and Milland reprised their roles for a sequel, Oliver's Story, released in 1978. It was based on Segal's 1977 novel. The film begins with Jenny's funeral, then picks up 18 months later. Oliver is a successful, but unhappy, lawyer in New York. Although still mourning Jenny, he manages to find love with heiress Marcie Bonwit (Candice Bergen). Suffering from comparisons to the original, Oliver's Story did poorly with both critics and audiences.

At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Canadian Pairs figure skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier skated their free skate to the film's theme, initially losing the gold medal in a now-infamous 2002 Winter Olympics figure skating scandal moment in sports history.

Marisa (she/her) has covered all things parenting, from the postpartum period through the empty nest, for Good Housekeeping since 2018; she previously wrote about parents and families at Parents and Working Mother. She lives with her husband and daughter in Brooklyn, where she can be found dominating the audio round at her local bar trivia night or tweeting about movies.

Everyday holds a new opportunity! That's especially true for Henry (Adam Sandler), who develops feelings for a woman with short term memory loss (Drew Barrymore). Basically, he has to swoon her over again and again, day after day. But for love, it's worth it!

We all know and love the classic tale of Cinderella. This time around, Camila Cabello embodies the role of the distressed princess, taking viewers on a musical journey where she begins her quest for love and self-worth. You'll definitely recognize a few faces in this all-star cast!

Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook is one of the most cherished romance movies of all time. Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah's (Ryan Gosling) love story is challenged by war, class, and time before they finally get their happy ending.

Can men and women ever really be just friends? It takes Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) 11 years to answer that question after meeting in college and reconnecting more than a decade later. Fun fact: When Harry Met Sally is one of Ree's favorite movies of all time!

What happens when your soulmate suddenly forgets who you are? The Vow explores that idea that when a husband (Channing Tatum) must make his wife (Rachel McAdams) fall in love with him again after a tragic accident robs her of her memory.

The Love Story driveway scene where Oliver is taking Jennifer home to meet his Dad, Oliver Barrett III, was filmed at Old Westbury Gardens in Old Westbury, New York. The house itself is a bit of a love story, as it was built by John Shaffer Phipps in 1903 for his fiancee Margarita. He promised to build a home for her in the United States that resembled her family estate in Battle Abby, East Sussex, England. John Shaffer Phipps was an heir to a U.S. Steel fortune. He began building the house in 1903 and it was completed in 1906. The house has 23 rooms and sits on 160 acres and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, but has been open for tours since 1959.

But he does not feel fulfilled by her, and he cheats on her with the zaftig and naughty Masha, his mistress, who lives in the Bronx. Yadwiga reminds him of the past, which cools his passion, and another problem is, she worships him so slavishly that making love with her is like attending devotions to himself. With Masha it is different.

She is a passionate woman, a Jew who also escaped the Nazis, but she doesn't live in the past, and they share a sexual obsession that helps them to exist only in the present - while they're making love, at any event. Masha knows about Yadwiga but doesn't much care.

Who are the enemies? The women that Herman loves. Why are they his enemies? Because love presumes commitment, and Herman is not capable of commitment, is not even capable of forming a working faith in the future. Many others have suffered much more at the hands of the Nazis than he did - he was lucky, up there in his hayloft - but he has lived under the threat of death for so long that no relationship can have any meaning for him. As he scurries between his three women, desperately trying to keep all three happy or at least placated, what drives him is not love but guilt.

"Enemies: A Love Story" is such an intriguing film because it refuses to be tamed, to settle down into a nice, comforting parable with a lesson to teach us. It is about the tumult of the heart, and Mazursky tells its story without compromise. There is no key to tell us how to feel. No easy laughs as Herman races from one woman to another, but no cheap pathos, either, at their fates. Indeed, this is not even a movie about how the women are victimized; each one receives more or less what her fate has dictated for her, and Herman, who suffers so grievously, is punished mostly by his own knowledge of what a rat he is.

"Enemies: A Love Story" has been described here and there as a sad movie. That is a very limited view. Parts of it are very funny, as Herman tries to get away with his desperate juggling act. Parts are ironic. Parts, especially the scenes with Huston, are heartwarming in a strange way, because they show one human being accepting the weaknesses of another. Of course there is sadness in the story, and of course such a story cannot end happily. But reflect that these people are lucky to be alive at all, and their stories become almost triumphant. Because a person has survived a great evil does not make him a great person - only a lucky one. And if you think Herman's not lucky, well, life's like that. You take your chances.

But what must we do to repair our economy? Moore doesn't recommend socialism. He has faith in the ballot box, but believes Obama has been too quick to placate the rich and has not brought about substantial reforms. The primary weapon that Moore employs is shame. That corporations and financial institutions continue to exploit the majority of Americans, including tea baggers and Town Hall demonstrators, is a story that hasn't been told.

Yeah, those. When it comes to sad romance movies that make you cry, honestly, we can't get enough. In the back of our minds, we totally know that most of the characters are made up (or, at the very least, are fictionalized adaptations of real people). But the emotions and heartbreaks, the wins and losses of being in love, still feel totally real. And isn't that what matters? We thought so.

The doomed-before-it-began story of Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), based on the short story by Annie Proulx, is guaranteed to make you cry. It's as poignant and as relevant as ever, even though we live nearly 60 years after Ennis and Jack first met.

They say it's better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all. Well, in Irreplaceable You, Abbie (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is diagnosed with terminal cancer (yes, the tissues will be coming out early in this one) and tries to find someone to love and care for the fiancé she's leaving behind. Trying to find the love of your life's next partner because you don't have long to live? Now THAT's love.
