Anyway i tried opening the test .txt inside the testfolder, but it requires a password and it doesn't accept blank one. I tried some made-up ones, but no luck, also i don't want to guess each time i want to view my backups.

I've never written any powershell scripts, but have done lots in other languages. It's weird that you say you get an error when you use $env:homepath, but it seems to me (from your later replies) that you're putting the symbols into the command & executing it in one operation - so it's not clear whether the problem is in building the command or in executing it.

I'd be inclined to separate the two processes: build the command you want to execute, into one string - which you can log somewhere to be certain it contains exactly what you expect, then after that execute whatever was in that string. If I were doing this to issue via cmd.exe I would be especially careful about placement of quotes, and maybe the need to escape some of the characters in the command or its arguments.

Also, it makes no sense to me that it is 7za.exe that produces the error if the same technique works in scripts that don't use 7zip. Surely powershell evaluates the whole command then issues it so 7za would see the resolved value of homepath?

There's a tool named EchoArgs that might help you; I know of it because as well as the PS utility of that name there's a version for use in cmd.exe terminals. I just googled for it and found useful info about the PS utility ... and there's mention of 7zip too.

I use PowerShell script, with .ps1 file extension, the $Env:homepath works fine if i want to use the built in archiver like Compress-Archive -Path C:\Reference\* -DestinationPath C:\Archives\Draft.zip.

The reason i don't use this anymore is because of the 4GB upper limit, and i want to back up way more than that.
