Is Isiolo the focal urban area in Kenya?

Isiolo town is relatively small, but extremely critical in importance.
It is strategically located at the edge of the vast “Northern Frontier
District” region of Northeastern Kenya, and almost equidistant from
all border points . Isiolo has been called “the end of civilization.”

Isiolo should be looked at in Regional Planning terms. Regionally the
government should be pushing to develop some strategically located
towns/cities. Isiolo is one of them. If Isiolo got an international
airport all the miraa from Meru would go through it & we would not
have to endure the miraa drivers on Thika road. Not only that but it
could be used for horticultural export. This could open up the area
for agro-manufacturing since the land around Isiolo is very very
fertile. So what should the government do? Come up with a masterplan
for the growth of Isiolo, put the infrastructure in place...drainage,
water supply and electricity apart from the airport & people will
come. This is what happened to Wajir after an international airport
was opened there. The town grew to 4 times its original size causing a
housing boom.

Other regional cities that should be a focal point are Kisumu, Nakuru,
Garissa & Mombasa. As support to these cities, smaller town around
them should be developed or used as offshoots:

Kisumu - Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii & maybe Eldoret (has potential to
become a regional centre itself)
Nakuru - Naivasha, Gilgil, Narok
Garissa - El-Wak, Wajir,
Mombasa - Ukunda/Diani, Kilifi, Malindi & Lamu ( if port is built then
it will get its own life) By the way does anyone have an idea how
Mombasa Port plans to expand? I have seen plans to build a bridge
across the creek which will affect further expansion. Antwerpen Port
is 5 times the size of the city (http://www.lloyd.be/download/Port
map.JPG)
Isiolo - Nanyuki, Naro Moru, Meru, Embu?, Nyeri? Marsabit, Moyale

Another town will have to be identified if oil is discovered around L.
Turkana. This could probably be Lodwar or South Horr. In my opinion
South Horr is better because of its location. An oil pipeline from
Southern Sudan will pass both Lodwar & South Horr. South Horr's
advantage lies in that it would be between four prospecting oil field
blocks and also above the malaria line.

What would happen to Lamu if a port is built there? Will the island
still retain its original charm? Where will the port be located ?

Hi

Very good opinions and observations.
I could not agree more with the fact that there needs to be
decentralisation and urban growth in other areas and not just
concentrate in Nairobi.

Biggest challenge is what strategy does an individual like you and me
have to ensure such great ideas do not just end up in this space or on
gather dust on the shelves.

Lets think together on the practical solutions you and me can offer
even with the least governement involvement coz it si definitely
lacking, at least yet.
