Dear DREAM.3D Community,

I am planning to use DREAM.3D to generate synthetic microstructures and export them to Abaqus for CP-FEM simulations. I have two specific questions and would highly appreciate any guidance, tutorials, or resources you could share.

1. Are there any specific tutorials, training documents, or recommended pipeline examples for exporting synthetic microstructures (RVEs) from DREAM.3D into Abaqus, specifically tailored for CP-FEM analysis?

2.My research requires modeling the interface between different microstructural zones (e.g., equiaxed substrate/Base material, HAZ, and columnar grain region). Is it possible in DREAM.3D to generate two or more distinct RVEs stacked on top of each other within a single volume, ensuring exact mesh connectivity (conformal meshing) at their interfaces?

Best Regards,
Cihan Savas

Dear Cihan,
Users in the past have been able to entice DREAM.3D Version 6.5.171 to do all of this. The knowledge is packed into all of the conversations on this google-group. Essentially there are 2 filters in DREAM.3D version 6.5.171 that you can use to export from the Image Geometry or from a Triangle Surface Mesh.

  • Abaqus Hexahedron Exporter is for ImageGeometry representations
  • Export Abaqus Surface Mesh is for Triangle Geometry representations.

I know others have used “GMesh” to also create an FE mesh.

DREAM.3D Version 6.5.171 also has a filter called “Append Z Slice (Image Geometry)” that will allow you to stack your RVEs together.

Another filter that has been used in the past is the "Potts Model” filter in order to lessen the sharp boundary between the appended stacks.

If you go to https://www.cmu.edu/engineering/materials/graduate/recent_doctoral_dissertations/2013.html and look for Dr. Sean Donegan’s PhD dissertation, he used this technique exactly to create a multi-modal RVE.
