Dear DREAM.3D Group Members,

I have received an EBSD dataset that needs to be converted into an FEM model (as shown in the attached image). Previously, I have always used .ctf files for modeling, so I am not sure how to proceed with this dataset. I am aware that OIM can be used to convert the data into a .ctf file, but I would like to know if it is possible to achieve FEM modeling directly through DREAM.3D.

Could you kindly provide any suggestions or specific filters that could help with this process? I would greatly appreciate any guidance or insights you can share.

Thank you very much for your support!

Best regards

Hello,
If you have a single .ang file you can skip the conversion to .h5ebsd. You can use the “Read Ebbs (ANG)” filter directly to import the Ebbs data. If the grid type inside the .ang file is “HEX” then you will need to convert the Hex grid to a square grid using the appropriate filter. Once you have read the .ang file into DREAM3D then you can proceed like normal DREAM.3D and use any cleaning filters, segment the grains and then you can export the data in a variety of formats. You do not state which FEM package you are using so I’m not sure which file format is most appropriate.

Also, https://www.dream3d.io   DREAM3D-NX version 7 is out and fully supported and free for students to use for their school work.

Dear Michael Jackson,

Thank you for your suggestions. I have successfully completed the modeling process from EBSD to FEM. However, I am now facing a new issue that I am unable to resolve. As shown in the attached image, some adjacent grains have intersecting elements, or certain grains appear discontinuous. Could you please suggest a solution to address this issue?

Additionally, I have another question. The FEM model was obtained using the 'Crop Geometry' filter. Now, I would like to perform grain size and Misorientation Angle statistics on the cropped FEM model and output the results. Could you recommend suitable filters for this analysis?

I appreciate your time and assistance. Looking forward to your response.

Best regards,
