2023 Workshop on Methods for Three-Dimensional Microstructure Studies

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to let you know that I am helping to organize a workshop on Methods for 3D Microstructure Studies at Carnegie Mellon University.  This will be the eleventh in the series and will take place August 16-18.  The workshop is intended for researchers at all levels and will combine presentations on 3D microstructure science as well as practical presentations on the tools and methods for reconstructing, analyzing and synthesizing 3D microstructures. A particular focus of the workshop is on 3D orientation maps, constructed from EBSD serial sections, transmission X-ray measurements, or synthetic microstructures. Participants in the workshop will learn how to use Dream.3D, which is a freely available software package that performs a wide range of functions for reconstructions of 3D microstructures, statistical analysis and generation of representative volume elements.

Is there, by any chance, an idea to make this workshop an online one, in one of its future installations? I strongly believe that such an initiative would gather the interest of many engineers around the globe, who would like to participate in it.

Hey everyone,

unfortunatly it seems like I've missed this great opportunity to get started with D3D. I'm thinking about attending next year, however it would be quite a stretch to not work with D3D until then. Is there any resource that you could recommend to prime me on D3D? The problem I'm trying to solve is to recreate 3D-microstructures from 2D-EBSD images. As there seems to be no out-of-the-box solution atm, I'd also be willing to do some fiddling myself.

The session was recorded again this year. You can request the links to the videos from the CMU organizer’s website. I am not aware of any open solutions to the 2D to 3D problem that exist in DREAM3D.
