 Dear  Raz,

This email is being sent to researchers with an interest in dreams to tell you about the recent developments at the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD) and to suggest ways in which you can help the empirical science mission of IASD.

We are also writing to ask you to consider submitting a paper or attending one of our annual IASD conferences, and/or to inform your students / other researchers / colleagues / faculty members about the conference as it is a supportive and enthusiastic environment for presenting and developing one's research.

The next annual conference is at the Wyndham O'Hare hotel in Chicago, 26th June to 30th June, 2009.   Submission deadlines are 15 December 2008 for a full paper (25 minutes) and 1 March 2009 for a 10-minute "Hot off the Press" research brief.

 Recent developments in IASD:

 ·    The academic journal Dreaming is now entering its 19th year, and its 6th year of publishing with the American Psychological Association.

 ·    IASD is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. IASD maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. Almost all research presentations at the annual conference are eligible for CE credits.

The 2008 Montreal conference had 18 Research sessions over 4 days, including 2 keynotes, a Hot off the Press session and a Poster Session. There were 59 Research presentations plus 16 poster papers.

The conference also had other academic research tracks, such as history, anthropology, film studies, psychotherapy, literature and spirituality.

IASD, in association with Bob Hoss, past president of IASD, and DreamScience.org, has provided over $14,000 in grants to empirical dream researchers in the past three years.

IASD's outgoing president is David Kahn, of Harvard Medical School; the current president is Olaf Hansen from Denmark. Tore Nielsen from Hopital du Sacre-Coeur de Montreal was the 2008 research track chair for the IASD conference in Montreal. David Kahn is the research track chair for the upcoming 2009 conference in Chicago.

A 3-volume set of books The New Science of Dreaming, published by Praeger in 2007, was edited by IASD past-president and editor of the journal Dreaming Deirdre Barrett, and Patrick McNamara. The 3-volume set, which has 280-360 pages per volume, has chapters from 69 researchers worldwide. Approximately 50% are IASD members. Many of these IASD members are also publishing in such peer-reviewed journals as Consciousness and Cognition, and Journal of Sleep Research.

As noted above, IASD conferences offer a supportive and enthusiastic environment for presenting and developing one's research. The presence of other disciplines is also useful for hypothesis-generation.

The conference is about appreciating dreams as well as about appreciating the science of dreams. This makes the conference a memorable and colorful experience and a superb opportunity for networking with established researchers.

Moreover, after giving conference attendees the opportunity to attend the serious work of paying attention in the more than 180 presentations there is the chance to meet, play and participate in the famous IASD Dream Ball with other folks interested in dreams and dreaming. The Dream Ball, an IASD tradition, offers participants the opportunity to dance and dress up as their favorite dream character or dream theme.
