LaSalle Brothers, Pakistan, formally the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Pakistan, is a Roman Catholic religious order for men. The De La Salle Brothers was founded in France in 1679 by Saint Jean-Baptiste de la Salle, who is also the Patron of Christian Teachers. The order was founded for setting up gratuitous schools where the children of workmen and the poor would learn reading, writing and arithmetic, and would also receive a Christian education through catechisms and other forms of instruction appropriate for forming good Christians.[1][2]

In 1999, the De La Salle brothers in Pakistan had two formation houses, in the Faisalabad and Lahore. In the last few years brothers from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Malta and the United States have joined the brothers in Pakistan.[5]

In 2010 the De La Salle Brothers celebrated their 50th anniversary in Pakistan. Brother Shahzad Gill was the Superior of the Pakistan Province. Many political figures, members of Parliament, and even Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani, studied in Christian Brothers schools. It is an education based on the values of respect for others, rights, freedom, and individual responsibility, which helps to form leaders who are now guiding the nation.

In 2011 the Brothers formed a new district under the Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea alliance. In 2012, Pakistan officially became part of the Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea District. Br. Ambrose Payne heads the mission in Pakistan.[3]

On 23 March 2012, the President of Pakistan conferred the civil award of Tamgha-e-Pakistan (Medal of Pakistan) on La Salle Brother Emmanuel Nicholas in recognition of his outstanding and meritorious services to the education sector in Pakistan.[9]

On 7 April 2020 the De La Salle Community in Multan celebrated the Tercentenary of Saint John Baptist De La Salle. The Chief Guest, Bishop Benny Mario Travas of Multan led the Mass attended by members of the community, the students and teachers of the school.[11]

I am a big horror fan, and if there is one type of story that gives me goosebumps, it's a true crime story. When researching this particular case, I thought it will never get to me but this disturbing story not only caught my attention but also sent my stomach into a twist. When I read the details, I began to feel grossed out and horrified by what these two brothers did. This is story about a pair of Pakistani brothers who practised cannibalism and excavated nearly 150 graves in order to consume human flesh and make curry out of it.

The brothers, Arif Ali, 31, and Farman Ali, 35, who are accused of being cannibals, resided with their mentally ill sister, Nusrat. Given their circumstances, it is evident that the two men, who are the sons of small-scale landowner, have not led very stable lives; Arif divorced his wife a few years ago, and she took their son with her when she left the house, and some years ago, Farman's wife moved home with her parents after splitting up with him and their five kids. According to villagers, Farman Ali, the eldest brother, is allegedly a heroin addict, while Arif, like his sister, has a mental illness.

It first became known in 2011 when the body of a 24-year-old woman had vanished from her grave. Alarm was raised when the family of Saira Perveen, 24, who was laid to rest, went back to the cemetery the next day only to discover that the soil on her grave had been pressed in and her body was gone.

On October 6, 2016, after one year of their hanging, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court accepted their appeal, set aside the Lahore High Court verdict and ordered their release. No sooner the convictions were set aside, it transpired that the president of Pakistan had already rejected their mercy petitions and they were hanged in the Bahawalpur jail.

The Criminal justice system fails to meet even the basic standard of due process and fair trial. The judicial system in Pakistan has been mired by delays and indolence of judicial officers, including the police, the state lawyers as well as the judiciary. The entire system of administration of justice has virtually collapsed to the point that rule of law has become non-existent and the state has virtually no presence in remote parts of the country.

Following the verdict, in 2016, the lawyers of the deceased brothers filed an application, stating that the Sessions judge, Home Secretary and the Interior Secretary had failed to discharge their duty mandated under Article 190 of the constitution, adding that despite having the knowledge of the pendency of the appeal, it is highly unprecedented and deplorable that both the brothers were so executed.

The lifting of the moratorium on the execution of death sentences since 2014 while its criminal justice system is mired in corruption and injustice is a complete travesty of justice and travesty of human decency. Exercising the death penalty in an already intolerant society is clearly a populist move rather than a deterrent to crime and terror. Blind to justice and international norms, these Courts have been awarding death sentences to minors and even the mentally and physically challenged as is the cases with Imdad Ali.

Despite the constitutional guarantee under Article 9 of the Constitution the courts of the state dole out death penalties without following any due process nor fairtrial. Right to life is a supreme and inalienable right, and any exception to it must be narrow and well -founded. The death penalty legitimizes an irreversible act of violence by the State and will inevitably claim innocent victims. As long as human justice remains fallible, the risk of executing the innocent can never be eliminated.

Lift up the Saleem brothers and pray for their physical, emotional and spiritual recovery from their arrest and detention ordeal. Ask also for healing for their traumatised families. Pray for protection for the brothers and their lawyers against zealous Muslims who may still try to attack them, despite the court's acquittal verdict.

"We took this case as a challenge. Our doctors are doing medical tests to determine why these kids remain active in the day but cannot open their eyes, why they cannot talk or eat when sun goes down," he said, as he visited the pair at his hospital.

The brothers are undergoing extensive medical testing in the capital, Islamabad, and samples of their blood have been sent to overseas specialists for further examination, he said. Researchers are also collecting soil and air samples from the family's home village.

Mohammad Hashim, the father of the two brothers, comes from a village near Quetta, the capital of southwestern Baluchistan province. He and his wife are first cousins and two of their six children died at an early age. Their other two children have not displayed any unusual symptoms.

During the day, 13-year old Shoaib Ahmed and his brother Abdul Rasheed did indeed seem normally active, energetic and cheerful as they emerged from their hospital room on Friday and walked to a nearby canteen to have tea.

The "Three Brothers - 2021" exercises kicked off with a solemn opening ceremony. While national anthems of the participating countries were played and their flags raised, a minute of silence was also observed to commemorate their "martyrs".

"Azerbaijan, Turkey and Pakistan have entered the history of mankind as close friends and brothers. At the heart of these relations is the close ties between our peoples. Evidence of this can be seen in the solidarity and support of Turkey and Pakistan to Azerbaijan from the first day of the 44-day counter-offensive operations launched by Azerbaijan against the Armenian armed forces on Sept. 27, 2020," Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry quoted him as saying.

"Today, cooperation between our countries in all areas is at the highest level. Important measures are being taken to further strengthen and develop our relations to ensure the region's and peoples' security," Mirzayev said.

He hoped that the exercises, which will be held until Sept. 20, will provide an extensive exchange of experience and views between servicemen of the three countries and will "greatly contribute" to further improvement of the professional training.
