Is it possible to connect a new carrier to an existing system without
interrupting the process?

Hi Ron,

Based on earlier tech support calls with the same question, it appears
the short answer is Yes.

However to auto-sense the I/O requires the process to be halted. But
if they manually add the I/O cards on the new carrier and take care to
add the correct type of cards as configured in the database, they
should be able to achieve this. Just be careful not to physically
bump the existing 8-wide carrier while working in the cabinet, because
of risk of interrupting the process.

Thanks for the feedback. Have you heard of any one having a problem
adding an 8 wide carrier? Emerson says it is no problem, however, I
hear they do not recommend it. to me it is either OK to add a carrier
to an online system or it is not.

Ron,
Technically it will work ... But please be careful about disrupting the other 8 wides. The common issue is that the existing 8wides get 'bumped' and communications get interrupted. Hence Emerson's preference for there to be a process down time or availability to add the 8 wide. But if you cannto take a shutdown ... Just be careful.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for advice, between your reply and Erik's, I think I can make a
more informed decision on which way to go.
