I'm in the process of installing new fieldbus instruments on a DeltaV
8.3 system. The new instruments only have a device definition back to
version 8.4. Emerson support indicated that it was not supported to
install the 8.4 definition onto 8.3 but was vague in the reasons why
and indicated that the definition would be the same file for 8.3 or
8.4. I'm in the process of upgrading to version 10.3 but have run
into problems with AMS causing a delay in the upgrade.

Due to the nature of the current project, we must move forward with
getting production going and completing the project on time.

Does anyone have any experience with loading a definition of a
slightly newer version onto an older version of DeltaV? I'm tempted
to try the 8.4 definition but don't want to corrupt the entire system.

Although I have not had to do this ... my reasonably educated guess is
that you wont have any problem.

That being said if possible you should get to the finally supported
sub-version for the major version 8 (which is 8.4.1) ... you could run
into other support issues with not being on 8.4

I heard back from Emerson and they stated the 8.4 DD would work fine
with 8.3. I will try it out and see if any problems occur.
