to draw.io Q&A
Hi! I really like the drawio software to create diagrams and things. Really easy.

I'm making something really big with more than 1k objects and It's getting a bit laggy. Are there any ways to improve the performance using components in my pc, like the cpu or gpu if that's possible?
This would make create easier without lag spikes. Thanks!

to draw.io Q&A

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out, and glad you're enjoying draw.io!

To help troubleshoot the lag you're experiencing with your 1k+ object diagram, I have a few questions:

  1. Which version are you using?
    • draw.io Desktop app (Windows/Mac/Linux)?
    • Browser-based at app.diagrams.net (if so, which browser)?
    • An integration (Confluence, Jira, VS Code, etc.)?
  2. What type of objects are in your diagram? For example:
    • Basic shapes and connectors
    • Images or embedded content
    • Shapes with effects (shadows, gradients, rounded corners)
  3. When does the lag occur?
    • Panning/zooming around the canvas?
    • Selecting or moving objects?
    • When the diagram first loads?

In the meantime, here are a few things you can try:

  • Split across pages — If your diagram allows, breaking it into multiple pages can significantly improve responsiveness
  • Outline view — Try View → Outline for navigating large diagrams
  • Reduce effects — Shadows and gradients on many objects can impact rendering
  • Browser hardware acceleration — If you're using a browser, ensure hardware acceleration is enabled in your browser settings

Regarding GPU/CPU: draw.io uses web rendering technology (HTML5/SVG), so it doesn't directly leverage GPU acceleration the way a 3D application would. However, the Desktop app and browser hardware acceleration settings can help offload some rendering work.

Thanks for the response.

By the time, it isn't that bad but I'm not close to finishing the project and I foresee more than 10k Objects. I hope no heavy lag or file corruption caused by the immense amount of items.

1. Yeah, I'm using the desktop app. I thought I could get even better performance
2. I'm using about everything: Arrows, geometric shapes, gifs, photos, gradients, strokes, etc.
3. The lag occurs when I try to connect shapes with arrows, but overall when I'm moving. I already got the trick when zooming so I don't have problems with that.

I needed to know If I could enhance the performance by my components. Thanks for your time.
I'll try my best to not CRASH my drawio file!
