Vertical lines are in the "misc" tab, just drag one into your drawing and then stretch it, change it's width attributes ect.

I agree, lines should be easier to find than hiding in a "misc" category.

Try typing "vertical" in the top box on the left entitled "search shapes".

Why can't we force an existing connector to go vertically, horizontally or in 5 degrees incremental angles by pressing a modifier key?

That's what many apps do!

I tried the vertical line, but it does not allow me to connect shapes with an arrow. 
All I wanted was to force a regular connector to go vertically and just land on a large shape, and get connected at the landing spot.
