To warm up for this edition of FEST, and especially for the Sound and Music Hub on June 24, we are glad to announce an open and free online session with acclaimed sound editor and designer Walter Murch.  Join us TOMORROW, June 19, at 11 AM (Lisbon/London Time), online. The pioneering film editor and sound designer Walter Murch was born in 1943 in New York City and studied at the University of Southern California’s film school. Murch launched his career with Francis Ford Coppola’s The Rain People (1969). He has since worked as a film and sound editor on numerous films, including American Graffiti (1973), The Godfather: Part II (1974), The Conversation (1974), Apocalypse Now (1979), for which he won an Oscar, The English Patient (1996), which earned him double Oscars for both film and sound editing, and Jarhead (2005), among others. Murch also directed Return to Oz (1985) and contributed to the restoration of Orson Welles’s classic Touch of Evil (1998). This 45-minute session will present Academy Award–winning editor and sound designer Walter Murch, the visionary behind the audiovisual identity of some of Hollywood's greatest masterpieces. He made history by winning Oscars for both Film Editing and Sound Mixing for The English Patient, and his revolutionary techniques helped shape iconic classics such as Apocalypse Now, The Godfather trilogy, and The Conversation. The session will include a Q&A afterwards. Alexander Nanau (Academy Award–nominated director of Collective); Miguel Faus, Spanish director of Calladita; and Danis Tanović (Academy Award winner for Best International Film with No Man’s Land), also known for his award-winning work at Cannes and Berlin. Also joining are Paul Davies and Pete Travis, who return to the festival to lead specialised workshops. The professional programme will also feature Dan Laustsen (3× Academy Award nominee for Cinematography), a regular collaborator of Guillermo del Toro. Katie Spencer (Academy Award–winning Set Decorator) and Sarah Greenwood (Academy Award–nominated Production Designer) for Barbie will also be present, further strengthening a programme that spans multiple creative and technical areas of the audiovisual industry. Also attending FEST are underwater cinematography specialists Françoise Valentine and Mike Valentine, whose credits include The Beach, Skyfall, and Trainspotting.
