Fewmodern theologians have been as influential to so many Christians as R.C. Sproul. He was was a master at communicating complex subjects to the average person accessibly, and consistently wrote faithfully and charitably on a variety of theological and cultural issues (something we all could learn to emulate). Although I could list dozens of books worthy of consideration, here are seven I have found very helpful and would encourage any Christian to read.[1. Regardless of theological persuasian.]

The Holiness of God. This is, without question, his best known book, and (arguably) his best. In The Holiness of God, Sproul helps believers gain a better grasp of this all-too-often neglected attribute of God.

R.C. Sproul (1939-2017) served as Senior Minister of Preaching and Teaching at Saint Andrew's Chapel, and was Founder and President of Ligonier Ministries. He was Chancellor of Reformation Bible College, wrote more than one hundred books, and was heard daily on Renewing Your Mind. He earned degrees from Westminster College, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and the University of Amsterdam.

Sproul was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the second child of Robert Cecil Sproul, an accountant and a veteran of World War II and his wife, Mayre Ann Sproul (ne Yardis).[9][10] Sproul was an avid supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates as a youth, and at the age of 15, he had to drop out from high school athletics in order to support his family.[10] He obtained degrees from Westminster College, Pennsylvania (BA, 1961), Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (MDiv, 1964), the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Drs., 1969), and Whitefield Theological Seminary (PhD, 2001). He taught at numerous colleges and seminaries, including Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando and in Jackson, Mississippi, and Knox Theological Seminary in Ft. Lauderdale.[11]

One of Sproul's mentors was John H. Gerstner, being one of his professors at Pittsburgh-Xenia Theological Seminary. The two of them, along with Arthur Lindsley, another of Gerstner's students, co-authored the book Classical Apologetics in 1984. Sproul's ministry, Ligonier Ministries, made recordings of Gerstner teaching various courses on theology and the Bible. John M. Frame records that Gerstner was Sproul's "main intellectual influence."[12]

Gerstner convinced Sproul to study under G. C. Berkouwer at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Free University of Amsterdam) in Holland, where he initiated study in 1964.[13] Sproul was granted leave in 1965 due to his wife's second pregnancy and mother's illness (during which he was appointed to teach philosophy at Westminster College), and later resumed study at distance. He returned to Holland in 1969 to receive a doctorandus degree.

Ligonier Ministries hosts several theological conferences each year, including the main conference in Orlando, FL, at which Sproul was one of the primary speakers.[16] Sproul served as co-pastor at Saint Andrew's Chapel, a congregation in Sanford, Florida.[11][17] He was ordained as an elder in the United Presbyterian Church in the USA in 1965, but left that denomination around 1975 and joined the Presbyterian Church in America. He was also a Council member of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. Being a staunch critic of the Catholic Church and Catholic theology, Sproul denounced the 1994 ecumenical document Evangelicals and Catholics Together.[18]

Sproul was an advocate of Calvinism in his many print, audio, and video publications, and advocated the Thomistic (classical) approaches to Christian apologetics, less common among Reformed apologists, most of whom prefer presuppositionalism.[citation needed] A dominant theme in his Renewing Your Mind lessons is the holiness and sovereignty of God. Sproul taught that headcovering should be practiced in churches as the ordinance is "rooted and grounded in creation".[19][20]

Sproul was a critic of postmodern philosophy. Having examined the effects of relativism on Western society, Sproul considered the 21st century to be "the most narcissistic generation in the history of the human race."[21]

The person that God, the Holy Spirit, draws to Jesus comes to Jesus, not because he's raped, not because he's coerced, not because he's dragged, kicking and screaming against his will, but because God, the Holy Spirit, in that act of effectual drawing, changes the heart of the person. Where that person previously was blind to the things of God, now the scales of the eyes have been removed, and that which was unpleasant to the soul now is shown to be sweet, attractive, and something that is altogether desirable. So the heavenly drawing of God is one by which God changes the attitude or the inner disposition of the soul of the person so that when the Father draws them to His Son, they come to His Son.[29]

On April 18, 2015, Sproul suffered a stroke and was admitted to a hospital.[33] Five days later, on April 23, Sproul went home from the hospital, suffering no ill effects. He was, however, diagnosed with a diabetic condition "that [would] be addressed through diet and regular medical attention."[33]

Some of Sproul's best-known books are The Holiness of God, Essential Truths of the Christian Faith, and What Is Reformed Theology? He is also well known for Chosen by God, a book about predestination and the sovereignty of God.[37] Through Ligonier Ministries and the Renewing Your Mind radio program and conferences, Sproul generated numerous audio and video lectures on the subjects of history of philosophy, theology, Bible study, apologetics, intelligent design, and Christian living. In addition, Sproul wrote more than 100 books and many articles for evangelical publications.[38] He signed the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, which affirmed the traditional view of Biblical inerrancy, and he wrote a commentary on that document titled Explaining Inerrancy. He also served as the general editor[39] of the Reformation Study Bible (ISBN 0-87552-643-8), which has appeared in several editions and was also known as the New Geneva Study Bible. In addition, Sproul was executive editor of Tabletalk magazine.[40]

The greatness of Moby Dick is in its unparalleled theological symbolism that is sprinkled abundantly throughout the novel. For example, consider its use of biblical names for characters such as Ahab, Ishmael, and Elijah, and ships such as Jeroboam and Rachel.

Many argue that he symbolizes the incarnation of evil. Ahab certainly holds this view, as he is driven by a monomaniacal hatred for this creature that took his leg and left him permanently damaged in body and soul.

Who can survive the hostile pursuit of such a being? Only those who have experienced the sweetness of reconciling grace can look at the overwhelming power, sovereignty, and immutability of the transcendent God and find peace rather than a drive for vengeance.

Many Christians are sorrowful yet rejoicing this evening, as R.C. Sproul has graduated to heaven. Sproul is known for communicating the deep truths of scripture in a way that any lay person could understand. As Duke Kwon said in a tweet this evening, "After a young person got electrified at a conference, you sent her home with a Sproul book." We've kept our ministry shelves lined with Sproul books for this very reason.

Sproul played a significant role in my own husband's growth, and therefore mine, and therefore our daughters. Mark wrote on Facebook this afternoon, "R. C. Sproul passed away today. I owe a lot to him. As an 18-year-old pizza delivery driver and new Christian, I listened to him preach and teach nightly. In my doctrine exam to graduate seminary, I quoted him, 'There are no maverick molecules in the universe.' Sproul helped stir my affections for God, philosophy, apologetics, and reformed theology. His book The Holiness of God is one of the top 5 most influential books I've ever read."

Like many faithful men, Sproul has been a spiritual father to my husband and me. We are immensely grateful to the Lord for men like him, who have shaped our faith in Christ, as we both surrendered to the Lord in non-Christian households.

What many may not know, though, is that Sproul was an excellent author of children's books too. We have purchased them over the years for our kids and for children in our ministry. They are rich with spiritual depth and truth and also captivating for the young reader. The illustrations are also beautiful. Makes perfect sense to me.

To me the solution is that the Apostles infallibly established the canon and the catholic church RECEIVED the canon through the early bishops. This was the view of the church fathers. It is also the view of the Westminster Confession. Why would Protestants not accept that?
