Hi all,

I read about using Google Translator as a widget and tried to put it
on my blog, but all that shows up is the title, "Google Translator".
The box with the drop down menu where readers can select their
language does not appear. Here is the link to the directions:
http://translate.google.com/translate_tools

I think this would be a wonderful tool if I could figure it out! Has
anyone else tried it or could someone try it and let us know if it
worked for you? I tried both options--embedding the code myself and
clicking on the "Add to Blogger" option (which seemed simple in
theory!).

Thanks!

Hi Elizabeth,

I tried it on my site. Here are my steps:

1. copy your Bog URL.
2. From the drop down Google Translator box, choose target language.
3. When I got there, I pasted my BLOG URL into the box.
4. Also, don't forget to choose English and the target language on that page (for me it was Spanish).
5. Follow directions on that page

I think it's too many steps to be handy, especially if the reader doesn't speak English. If anyone knows another way of installing this gadget, please advise.

Hope this is clear!
Bonnie

Thanks, Bonnie. Apparently, I did embed the gadget correctly. I think
I can't see it because of my browser settings. Another challenge
participant confirmed that he could see it on my blog. It's
interesting to note, though, that when I limited the translator to
Spanish only, the reader could not get the page to revert back to
English. But when you allow all languages in the drop down menu, a
button appears at the top that says "go back to original". I'm just
excited to have this option for my Spanish speaking families!

Do you guys know how well Google Translator work with Spanish?  Our principal has told us not to use online translators because they do such a poor job of creating a correct translation.  My own experience is that many of them aren't very good.  I use them mostly for words and phrases but not paragraphs.  I'd be interested in someone who reads Spanish looking over the results.  Maybe I'll try it, we have quite a few Spanish readers on our staff.
