Finders Fees

I am looking for guidance on ‘Finders Fees’.

I am in negotiations regarding a finders fee that I will pay to a 3rd party that brings me work that I would not otherwise receive.

Online research indicates anywhere from 5% - 35% of the project cost.

I was thinking no more than 20%… maybe 10-15%.

Any perspective on finder fee rates in our line of work is appreciated or an alternative form of compensation for a 3rd party bringing me work.

I’m not against a finders fee in this situation. I just want it to be fair/reasonable to both parties.

Hi Kraig

For years, I have paid 10% of the gross.  I tell them the first check I write as i receive each payment check goes to you.  Depending on the job size, it’s usually in thirds or fourths.

How much work did the other party do?  Is it his personal client?  Sometimes they “farm” out and so desire higher rates.  

Or if it’s a simple pass off, CC’d an email to you I’d just do 10% if they want.  I usually just rack up favors… lol

We have paid between 15% - 20% of gross. As the clients pay the bills, we pay the commission. The percentage has varied with the referral sources.

Those I want to really incentivize I gladly pay 20%. It's found money for us since we would never have landed the job otherwise.

Follow up jobs from the same new client are not commissionable in our case.
