The Scrap Yard (also referred to as "Scrap and Old Planes") is where airlines can buy and sell used planes in Airline Tycoon 2. In this sense, it is equivalent to the museum in the original Airline Tycoon series. To get to the Scrap Yard, you must first enter Hangar 51. To the right of where your character is standing, towards the back of the hangar, you will see a door. Click on the door to access the Scrap Yard. You can also press its shortcut key ("G") to teleport there. As is the case in Airline Tycoon, the used planes sold here are less expensive than the new ones sold in Hangar 51, but they also have worse maintenance conditions than new planes.
To buy a used plane at the Scrap Yard, tell the worker there that you would like to buy a used plane and he will present you with a list of used planes. The list will show the name of each plane (this can be changed after purchase), the cost of the plane, and its current maintenance condition.
As mentioned, you can also sell used planes at the Scrap Yard. Simply ask do you also buy used airplanes, and select the plane you would like to sell to sell it. Scottish game designer Chris Sawyer released Transport Tycoon in 1994, and spent time to consider what to do for a sequel. Some of the revenue he earned from Transport Tycoon he used towards travelling in Europe and the United States, which included visits to theme parks with roller coasters.[1] Though Sawyer said he had hated roller coasters before,[2] he became fond of them through these trips, and since has become a roller coaster enthusiast and had ridden on at least 700 coasters.[1] From these trips, Sawyer decided to follow Transport Tycoon with a roller coaster-based simulation, giving him a partial excuse to continue visiting theme parks to "research" roller coaster rides.[3][2] The game was to be called White Knuckle for the majority of the game's development. However, to follow the tradition of the Tycoon titles, the game was renamed accordingly.[4]
The game was developed in a small village near Dunblane over the course of two years.[2][5] Sawyer wrote 99% of the code for RollerCoaster Tycoon in assembly code for the Microsoft Macro Assembler, with the remaining one percent written in C.[3] The graphics were designed by artist Simon Foster using several 3D modeling, rendering, and paint programs.[3] Initially, Sawyer used family and friends to help playtest the game, and then turned to Hasbro, the publisher, to help complete more extensive bug-testing and feedback.[1][5]

This paper introduces MicroRCT, a novel open source simulator inspired by the theme park sandbox game RollerCoaster Tycoon. The goal in MicroRCT is to place rides and shops in an amusement park to maximize profit earned from park guests. Thus, the challenges for game AI include both selecting high-earning attractions and placing them in locations that are convenient to guests. In this paper, the MAP-Elites algorithm is used to generate a diversity of park layouts, exploring two theoretical questions about evolutionary algorithms and game design: 1) Is there a benefit to starting from a minimal starting point for evolution and complexifying incrementally? and 2) What are the effects of resource limitations on creativity and optimization? Results indicate that building from scratch with no costs results in the widest diversity of high-performing designs.
