The problem had nothing to due with Permissions or with a "Naming" error (such as disallowed characters). It had everything to do with the length of the file's PATH . . . that is, the total sum of characters in the various nested folders (that is, folders within folders within folders, etc.) that led to the folder where I wanted to save the Word file.
I had exceeded the total number of path characters allowed by Word. This restriction is coded into the application; there's no way to alter that restriction.

Asset creator gives me occasionally an error, sometimes related to too long asset name, sometimes not. I have my assets library on a OneDrive. Most assets work well and most can be generated by shortening the name, but some can't be helped. Not sure if it's related to texture names or something.

Is there a chance you could kindly share the whole directory path with me to the assets themselves? (like: "P:\Enscape\Assets for example") Does it help if you reduce the amount of sub-folders in which the Assets are located? Also, any chance that some Assets/Textures or such do in fact have long names, and does it help if you shorten those?

- The specified file or folder name is too long. The URL path for all files and folders must be 260 characters or less (and no more than 128 characters for any single file or folder name in the URL). Please type a shorter file or folder name

I need to make backups of some files on a network share. However, I need to copy those files to my local drive before burning the disks because those files might be in use. Some of the files won't copy because the file path is too long. Is there any workaround other than changing the file structure?

2) in my case, I have copied files with Explorer, it alerts me that some files are not copied because of long file names. Then I use FreeFileSync to sync the remaining (non-copied) files.

Same goes for me. I am not also using that path or files on my UiPath development but that error suddenly pop up. My problem was solved by removing that file. You can also relocate that file in not too much deeper subfolder. Try to transfer that folder or file in the desktop and see if it works. That works for me.

You notice the core.longpaths option there. I can checkout my project from bitbucket perfectly and work on it in inteliJ. However when I try to stage a file longer then 260 chars sourcetree stages it for delete. I can commit the file just fine with command line git or even in inteliJ.

"Long path tool" is very helpful for this problem. You can solve this problem like copy, delete, long path files by using this tool.I used to have similar problems too, but after using "long path tool" everything was solved.

I read that the 260 path length windows limitation was removed a while ago. I do not see why this issue was not fixed (even notepad++ can open long paths ). It is a shame a free tool can do more than a tool I paid for.

I also use sublime text editor for my web projects. I must say its a great text editor. I love it. But the problem here is that it does not open long path name files. Actually no opeartions can be performed on such a file, and it becomes a mess after sometime when you can do anything about it. Just like a trojan or virus sitting on your system. To solve this I used GS Richcopy 360 which solved my problem. Till now In never encountered that problem again. Nice software to rely on.

We actually use the unicode versions of the Win32 API everywhere. For instance drag and drop for files works with longer paths, as do packages. We did have an issue with the open file dialog not working due to a missing manifest setting.

Can someone please help me out with this? I tried using long path tool but they want me to pay in order to delete the folder. However I cant find the file the system is complaining about. I went to the folder

I don't know what to do, I have been reading a lot of work-arounds online however most people suggest using long path tool but I remember having this issue in the past but I cant remember how I solved. I believed it was something to do with the Developer Command prompt and resetting some paths.

The second step would be to not map $/ to your user profile in your workspace mapping, but $LegalHoldings/Sprints/Sprint5/Expunctions to something like C:\Workspace\Sprint5 specifically that would drastically reduce the path depth required for your project.

There are several solutions, such as using environment variable to point to the destination directory, or to create alias to cd there (via doskey). My favorite solution uses subst to substitute the long path with a drive letter:

Hi,
when trying to use SkyDrive as my cloud storage provider and BoxCryptor as a security layer, the created filenames were far too long with 248 characters. Adding some encrypted folder names before, Win7 gave up...
Any way to avoid that? The other filenames were all in a reasonable length. Would changing my password (not the length of the pw) result into an other random (and hopefully shorter) filename?

Robert:
am I right in thinking that as long as I use "do NOT encrypt filenames" this issue at least reduces to the fact that Dropbox et al do not use the Unicode interface on Windows for long filenames?
That is: Boxcryptor does not make things worse.

Since there have been many instances that users encounter problems in managing files that are too long, the need to develop a more systematic and efficient file managing software has finally come. The Long Path Tool is definitely a better path too long utility that can take care of error messages like path too long, filename too long and filename is too long. It can even unlock files that are locked by other system processes and can even scan your drives for path too long files longer than 255 characters and many more...
