The community created Heretic II Enhancement Pack v1.07, which can be found here: -heretic-ii-enhancement-pack/ or -ii/downloads/heretic-ii-enhancement-pack-v107. The archive is in 7z format, and to open it, you will need an archive manager. I suggest 7-Zip.
If you are planning to install one of the nascent Heretic II source ports (CAS or Portals), you will need the official Heretic II Enhancement Pack v1.06, which can be found here: -heretic-ii-enhancement-pack/. Although this guide is primarily focused on the community made v1.07 enhancement pack, I would suggest downloading this enhancement pack anyway, and keeping it as a backed up somewhere. One can hope those source ports will eventually be the easiest and best way to play the game, and you'll want it then. You can also use the official version if v1.07 doesn't work for you.
To install Heretic II in windows 10, insert or mount the virtual CD-ROM, open it, and go into the bin directory. Run DEMO32.EXE, and select H2_Setup.dbd to install the game. You cannot install the game using H2_Setup.exe or Setup.exe on the CD-ROM. If you encounter an error related to UninstallShield running, reboot, go into C:\Windows and delete IsUninst.exe or rename it IsUnist.bak. This is not a Windows 10 file, but is installed with old games or software. Heretic II will install a new one there. If this still does not solve the problem, try installing the game in Windows 10 safe mode. If you are using a virtual drive, you will need to burn Heretic II back to a physical CD-ROM before starting safe mode, since your virtual drive software may not load in safe mode.
The plot of the adventure, which is very forgotten in this type of title, is located in an apocalyptic world where three brothers, known as the snake riders, possessed the 7 kings in force and corrupted their armies. The Elves, on the other hand, are resistant to magic and opposed the rule of dictators and were labeled as heretics. So an elf named Corvus - the main character of the game - embarks on a quest of revenge against the snake riders and their army.
So, i've asked Quasar and gave me the permission to necrobump this thread with a method which brings back Heretic 2 music on newer windows (at least for XP,7 and 8.1):
1 - Apply the 1.6 patch that you can find here: -II-Enhancement-Pack-v1.06
2 - Apply the quake2.dll patch that you can find here: -software.com/files/nglide/heretic2_patch.zip
3 - Following this post: -nextlevel.com/tnl/threads/58926-Fix-CD-audio-looping-in-Windows-7-with-certain-games download the program and patch the quake2.dll and rip the Heretic 2 music into wav or mp3
4 - Enjoy the correct music (looped) while you play
Notes:
- On Windows 8.1 x64 loading a savegame crashes the game (solved using a VMWare Workstation Virtual Machine with Windows XP SP3 and 3D Acceleration), but I haven't found a real solution, and maybe, there is no solution at all: we are talking about Windows versions which removed a lot of legacy stuff.
- You can use nGlide or OpenGL acceleration: they are working on Win 8.1 x64 and on the XP Virtual Machine
Three brothers (D'Sparil, Korax, and Eidolon), known as the Serpent Riders, have used their powerful magic to possess seven kings of Parthoris, turning them into mindless puppets and corrupting their armies. The Sidhe elves resist the Serpent Riders' magic. The Serpent Riders thus declared the Sidhe as heretics and waged war against them. The Sidhe are forced to take a drastic measure to sever the natural power of the kings destroying them and their armies, but at the cost of weakening the elves' power, giving the Serpent Riders an advantage to slay the elders. While the Sidhe retreat, one elf (revealed to be named Corvus in Heretic II) sets off on a quest of vengeance against the weakest of the three Serpent Riders, D'Sparil. He travels through the "City of the Damned", the ruined capital of the Sidhe (its real name is revealed to be Silverspring in Heretic II), then past the demonic breeding grounds of Hell's Maw and finally the secret Dome of D'Sparil.[2]
One thing I was left curious about was the name. I've now looked it up, and I wish I hadn't. Originally, a "heretic's fork" was a medieval inquisitorial torture device consisting of a collar with sharp prongs pointing upward into the wearer's chin, and downward into their sternum. The result being that you can't lower your head or speak without piercing yourself. I suspect there's some kind of office ergonomics parallel at work here, but I really don't want to think about it too hard. While I've got you, here's our list of the best management games.
I have to be honest though, Loki botched this one. The installer on the disc is broken, meaning you need to download the heretic2-install-x86.run setup script instead. This is not a huge ordeal, assuming you are aware of the issue, but things went further downhill when I used the Loki Update tool to patch the game from 1.06b to the final 1.06c release. This introduced a number of sporadic but persistent segmentation faults throughout the game. Reverting solved the issue.
I don't think the gold-ish windows would be visible on the outside of the hull, in the same way as there are 1-way windows of that nature on 'Snowbound' and 'Assembly'.Better late than never I guess. Here's my supposition of a probable location of the map in the cruiser:
