Sivapuranam is a devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva, composed by the ninth-century Tamil saint Manickavasagar. It is part of the Thiruvasagam, a collection of 51 poems that praise and describe the various aspects of Shiva. Sivapuranam is considered to be one of the most sublime and sacred works of Tamil literature, as it expresses the intense devotion and surrender of the poet to the supreme Lord.
Sivapuranam consists of 95 verses in a poetic form called Kalivenba, which means "sweet words". The hymn narrates the origin, appearance and attributes of Shiva, as well as the way to attain his grace and liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The poet also recounts his own spiritual journey, from being trapped in ignorance and suffering in various forms of life, to being blessed by Shiva's vision and grace, and finally attaining the state of bliss and oneness with him.
Sivapuranam is chanted by devotees of Shiva, especially on auspicious occasions such as Pradosham, Shivaratri and Thiruvathirai. The hymn is believed to have the power to remove sins, diseases and sorrows, and bestow peace, prosperity and enlightenment. Many devotees also experience a deep sense of joy and ecstasy while chanting or listening to Sivapuranam.
