"A few years ago, when I visited my mother in Karaikal, a coastal town in South India, construction work on a multi-storey building was underway across from the home I grew up in. Most of the construction workers were young migrant workers, who worked all day, bathed under the municipal tap at the street corner and slept at the construction site. While the PNAS findings only apply to bone building, Varghese and her students at UC San Diego are working on a variety of projects to understand how stem cells thrive and differentiate into a variety of cell types. With this information, they hope to design biomaterials that can be used to help transform stem cells into tissues that may someday replace diseased or degenerated bone, muscle, or blood vessels.

Stem cell research may seem like an unusual endeavor for engineers, but tissue construction and the development of biomaterials have become one more type of "building" in the engineering repertoire, Varghese said.

The major problem arises at yard because of scarcity of space for arranging the building blocks of ship under construction. An innovative algorithm nicknamed ISBAS (Intelligent Spatial Block Arrangement Scheduler) has been developed and implemented using genetic algorithm and a workable computer program has been developed using VC++. The detailed genetic operation is performed to run to meet the objectives of the critically complicated problem. Also hand in hand algorithms such as knapsack problem, traveling salesmen problem and weight assignment algorithms to segregate the better options. An indigenously developed looking forward algorithm is also in place.
